Sheriff's Deputy Leaves Post After Adult Film Career Disclosed

Financial struggles lead Arapahoe County officer to turn to pornography, prompting internal investigation

A Colorado sheriff's deputy resigned this week after her involvement in the adult film industry came to light, prompting internal scrutiny from her department. Shannon Lofland, who served over two decades at the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office, faced increasing financial difficulties which she claims drove her to take on additional work as she struggled to support her family.

According to CBS News Colorado, Lofland shared her story, saying, "I was desperate, I was drowning. I found a legal, lucrative means for providing support for my family to save my home and feed them." Currently 44 years old, Lofland has been working with the sheriff's department since 2003 and was the department's driver training instructor prior to her resignation.

The inquiry started when the sheriff's office caught wind of her off-duty job, which Lofland maintained lasted only about a month. Although the department did not detail how they discovered her second job, Lofland admitted to breaching internal guidelines, which explicitly require employees to seek permission for secondary employment.

"It was wrong to not disclose my side job," she acknowledged. “I knew it could be perceived as leading a double life. There are many deputies and officers trying to make extra money, with or without permission. People are just trying to survive during difficult times,” she continued, reflecting on the broader struggles among her peers.

Her financial troubles stemmed significantly from unfortunate events, including extensive damage to her home from a storm last June, totaling around $500,000, with her insurance refusing to cover the repairs. Rising interest rates compounded her issues, as they tripled the payments on her adjustable-rate mortgage, raising the possibility of foreclosure. Coupled with soaring utility, gas, and grocery costs, it’s no wonder Lofland felt pressed to take drastic steps to support her family.

Lofland shared the pressure she felt, saying, "My actions have been made out of desperation." She noted her husband supported her decision to turn to adult films, explaining, “Some may judge and say there are ‘better’ ways to make money, but at the time I had no lucrative options available to me.”

Despite her resignation from the sheriff's department, Lofland claimed she made enough money from her adult film appearances to afford her mortgage and described her experiences within the adult industry as professional, without any feeling of coercion or pressure to act against her will.

The sheriff's office has refrained from commenting on the matter, citing privacy concerns surrounding Lofland's case and mentioning due process issues. Other sources within the department explained they were not able to provide details on the investigation.

Lofland expressed her sadness over having to leave her law enforcement position, emphasizing her dedication to the role she held for so long. “I found my niche within law enforcement as someone who plays a support role. I have been dedicated and loyal. I truly enjoy what I do and the lives I have touched.” Despite earlier commitments, she also stepped down from her position on the state’s Peace Officer Standards and Training board, prior to her resignation.

Reflecting on her tumultuous experience, it’s clear Lofland's situation sheds light on the challenges many face, especially within service professions, as they juggle their work obligations alongside personal financial crises.
