On December 23, 2024, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum held her final press conference of the year, during which she discussed various topics including social projects, the upcoming year’s focus on indigenous women, and the government’s response to migration issues. The President opened the conference with warm wishes for the holiday season, expressing her hopes for families to unite during the festive period.
"Christmas is about family, and this year, I will be spending it with my grandchild," she said jokingly, setting a relaxed tone for the conference. She then introduced key team members, including Security Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez and Arturo Medina, who presented economic reports and initiatives aimed at stabilizing prices for consumers, especially during the holiday shopping season.
Arturo Medina kicked off the session by announcing updates on the 'Who is Who' price monitoring program, which helps citizens identify the best places to purchase fundamental goods. Medina highlighted the need for transparency and accountability among retail chains to help families manage their budgets effectively.
According to Medina, the cheapest basic basket was found at Bodega Aurrera Airport store at 720 pesos, whereas the most expensive was reported at Lei, costing 1,023 pesos. He declared, "This program serves as guidance for families making purchase decisions during one of the busiest shopping seasons of the year," reinforcing the government's commitment to fighting inflation.
One of the conference's key highlights was the presentation of the ‘Heroínas y Héroes Paisanos’ program, aimed at ensuring the safe return of Mexican migrants celebrating Christmas with their families. Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez emphasized the government’s pledge to protect the rights of returning migrants and prevent any potential abuses by authorities during their transit through Mexico.
"It's important to understand the significance of this season for our migrants who have worked hard abroad, and we want to make their return as safe and dignified as possible," said Rodríguez. The program, which encompasses the entire country, operates with 226 support modules and over 522 observers to assist migrants effectively.
Sheinbaum noted the historical ties between Mexican migrants and their homeland, reporting on the assistance provided to migrants and the anticipated influx during the holidays, stating, "Our commitment reflects on the respect and kindness we owe to those who contribute infinitely to both nations' economies and cultures. 37.3 million Mexicans live abroad, and during this time of year, many return to reconnect with their families and roots. We welcome them back.
The press conference also tackled pressing political matters, including immigration issues raised by incoming President Donald Trump. Sheinbaum expressed hope for constructive dialogue with the newly elected administration, highlighting her stance against any interventionist policies.
"We will collaborate, but Mexico is sovereign and independent. Lasting solutions can be achieved through cooperation rather than intervention," she emphasized, clarifying her long-term vision for bilateral relations.
Responding to inquiries about Mexico's plans for counteracting Trump's potential immigration policies, Sheinbaum mentioned the importance of humane treatment and urged the need for future cooperation. She indicated the country's readiness for potential deportations, ensuring support structures are established for returning nationals.
Not missing the chance to highlight the government’s social agenda, Sheinbaum also unveiled the focus for 2025, which will commemorate indigenous women. The government logo will now feature women from various indigenous backgrounds, including Mexica, mixteca, and huasteca.
"The year 2025 will reflect our commitment to celebrating the integral role of indigenous women and their significance to our nation’s identity," she stated. This initiative is part of broader efforts to honor and assist vulnerable populations within Mexico.
Further, Sheinbaum promised continued investment and infrastructure improvements, including extending railroads and enhancing transportation systems, reaffirming her government’s commitment to bolstering the economy.
"We are working on creating more job opportunities, and improving public services, and strengthening our economy. There's so much work to be done, but I’m confident we will see significant progress over the new year," she asserted.
The President concluded the press conference by urging Mexicans to cherish family bonds over consumerism during the holidays, stating, "Let’s prioritize love and togetherness over material possessions this season. It’s about the moments shared with those we love.\"
She reminded attendees about the importance of community and care for one another, stating her hopes for the upcoming year: "Together, we will work hard for the wellbeing of everyone across this beautiful nation. Happy holidays!" The event consolidated the Sheinbaum administration's commitment to social justice, economic development, and prioritizing the needs of citizens during this holiday season.
