In a solemn ceremony on April 26, 2025, His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, attended the funeral of Pope Francis in Rome, representing UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The funeral service began in Saint Peter’s Square at the Vatican City and concluded with burial rites at the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, attended by numerous dignitaries and world leaders from across the globe.

Accompanying Sheikh Khaled were Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence; Saif Saeed Ghobash, Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council; and Maryam Eid AlMheiri, Chairperson of the Abu Dhabi Media Office. Together, they paid their respects to the late Pope, who was revered as a symbol of peace, coexistence, and interfaith dialogue.

During the ceremony, Sheikh Khaled conveyed condolences from the UAE President to Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, and Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals. He expressed sincere sympathies not only to these officials but also to the College of Cardinals, the Holy See, and the global Catholic community, mourning the loss of a leader who dedicated his life to fostering understanding among different cultures.

Pope Francis, who passed away recently, left behind a remarkable legacy that included significant efforts in promoting intercultural and interfaith dialogue. His historic visit to the UAE in 2019 marked the first time a Pope had visited the Arabian Peninsula. This visit culminated in the signing of the Human Fraternity Document alongside His Eminence the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Professor Ahmed Al-Tayeb. The document serves as a global charter for peace and human coexistence and was later adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, leading to February 4 being designated as the International Day of Human Fraternity.

Sheikh Khaled highlighted the importance of Pope Francis’s humanitarian legacy, stating that it would continue to inspire future generations to uphold values of tolerance and mutual understanding. "Pope Francis was a symbol of human fraternity, cultural coexistence, and interfaith dialogue," he remarked, emphasizing the need for continued efforts in these areas.

The funeral procession, which drew leaders and dignitaries from various nations, reflected the profound impact Pope Francis had on global peace initiatives and interfaith relations. Heads of state from around the world gathered to honor a man who was not just a religious leader but also a global advocate for social justice and humanitarian causes.

As the ceremony unfolded, attendees were reminded of Pope Francis's commitment to dialogue and understanding among diverse communities. His teachings and actions have resonated with millions, making him a beloved figure not only within the Catholic Church but also among those of different faiths and beliefs.

In a world often divided by conflict and misunderstanding, the legacy of Pope Francis serves as a reminder of the power of compassion and the importance of building bridges between cultures. His efforts to promote peace and coexistence are now more relevant than ever, as communities around the world face challenges that require unity and understanding.

As the global community reflects on the life and contributions of Pope Francis, many are inspired to continue his work in fostering dialogue and cooperation among different faiths and cultures. The Human Fraternity Document, a cornerstone of his legacy, remains a guiding principle for many organizations and individuals committed to promoting peace.

In conclusion, the funeral of Pope Francis was not just a farewell to a beloved leader but also a call to action for all who strive for peace and understanding in a complex world. His teachings will continue to resonate, inspiring individuals and communities to work towards a more harmonious future.
