Sheffield Eagles have officially announced the signing of 21-year-old back-rower Nick Staveley on a contract that will see him remain with the club until the end of the 2026 season. The announcement was made public on March 20, 2025, marking a new chapter in Staveley’s professional career.
Staveley joins the Eagles following his recent release from Castleford Tigers, where he spent time on trial. He originally began his professional journey at Hull FC, where he made his debut during a Challenge Cup match against Castleford Tigers in May 2023. Over the past two seasons, Staveley showcased his versatility on the field, making eight appearances for Hull FC, where he played roles both as a back-rower and a prop. Notably, he scored a try in Hull FC’s 28-24 victory over London Broncos during the Betfred Super League season.
After being released by Hull FC last month, Staveley had a successful trial stint with Castleford before joining Sheffield Eagles. His career, however, has been marked by challenges, including a significant setback when he had to sit out a season due to an ACL injury sustained while playing at Hull FC. "He’s had a season out with an ACL injury which he got whilst he was at Hull, but he was getting a run of games in their side at the start of last season, and I’m excited to see what he can bring to us,” said Sheffield Eagles Head Coach Craig Lingard.
The coach emphasized Staveley’s potential to strengthen the team, indicating that the club was in need of additional players to bolster their ranks. "I’m really pleased to get him in, he’s another body we needed to get in,” Lingard expressed enthusiastically. The coaches and fans alike are hopeful that Staveley’s return to the pitch will be a fruitful one, as he aims to regain his form post-injury.
In addition to his Super League experience with Hull FC, Staveley also gained valuable game time while on loan at Newcastle Thunder in the Betfred Championship. During the 2023 season with Newcastle, he made 13 appearances that contributed to his development as a player. His journey is a testament to resilience, bouncing back from injury and ready to take on new challenges with Sheffield Eagles.
The signing is generating excitement among Eagles’ fans, and there’s anticipation for an exclusive interview with Staveley in the coming week, where supporters will get their first chance to hear directly from the new player about his aspirations and readiness to contribute to his new team.
As the Sheffield Eagles gear up for the upcoming season, bringing in a young player like Staveley is seen as a crucial step in improving the squad. With the backing of the coaching team and an eager fanbase, Staveley’s participation promises to be an exciting development for the Eagles. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for more updates as the season approaches, and particularly for Staveley’s upcoming interview, which is sure to provide more insights into his mindset and goals as he begins this new chapter in his career.
