Sharp Sells Sakai Plant Part To Sekisui Chemical

The agreement focuses on developing next-generation solar cell technology to boost renewable energy efforts.

Sharp Corporation announced on October 26, 2023, its agreement to sell part of its Sakai plant to Sekisui Chemical Industries for 25 billion yen.

This strategic move is set against the backdrop of Sharp's efforts to divest underperforming assets, particularly after the complete cessation of LCD production at the Sakai facility due to unprofitability earlier this year.

Sekisui aims to leverage the facility to ramp up its production of perovskite solar cells, which are touted as the next generation of solar technology capable of improving efficiency and lowering costs. Sekisui has outlined ambitious plans to invest significantly to establish production lines targeting operational readiness by 2027.

The move has drawn attention from the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) of Japan, which is poised to provide support, aligning with its broader mandate to promote the transition to renewable energy and reduce carbon footprints nationwide.

"We believe this acquisition is key to accelerating the transition to renewable energy using perovskite solar cell technology," stated a spokesperson from Sekisui Chemical Industries.

Sharp's spokesperson acknowledged the sale, noting, "This sale is part of our strategy to focus on more profitable business segments and technologies." This transaction reflects Sharp's commitment to streamlining operations and focusing on sectors with higher profitability margins.

The Sakai plant’s sale is not the sole transformation underway at Sharp. The company previously announced plans to sell additional segments of the Sakai facility, including its land and buildings associated with liquid crystal displays, to SoftBank for about 100 billion yen.

The upcoming reallocation of Sekisui's operations at the Sakai site involves the establishment of a new company dedicated to the design, manufacture, and sale of perovskite solar cells, expected to be operational by January 2025. Alongside, the company aims to initially run production lines capable of generating 100,000 kilowatts and eventually scale up these capabilities to 1 million kilowatts by 2030.

The benefits of this pivot to perovskite technology are significant, not just for Sekisui, but for the renewable energy sector overall. While traditional solar panels made from silicon have dominated the market, perovskite technology offers potential cost reductions and higher efficiencies, making solar power more accessible and competitive.

Both companies view this endeavor as integral to Japan's plans for sustainability and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The integration of government subsidies and financial backing according to METI's plans could bolster Sekisui's production capabilities significantly, enhancing Japan’s position within the global renewable energy market.

With these developments, Sekisui Chemical is poised to play a pivotally innovative role as it embarks on the future of solar energy production at the newly acquired Sharp facility. Given the uncertainties surrounding global energy supplies and the pressing need for sustainable solutions, the anticipation around Sekisui's commitment to perovskite technology continues to grow.

Overall, this sale marks another chapter not just for Sharp Corporation, but also for Japan's larger energy narrative as it seeks to redefine its approach to renewable sources. Every facet of this transaction, from Sharp's strategic shifts to Sekisui's ambitious growth plans, reflects the fast-changing dynamics of technology and energy.

Through the lens of innovation, profitability, and environmental responsibility, this agreement emphasizes the collaboration necessary for pushing forward the frontiers of renewable energy technology.
