Seville Braces For Uncertain Weather During Semana Santa

As Holy Week approaches, forecasts indicate rain could disrupt processions in Seville.

As Semana Santa approaches, Seville is enveloped in the atmosphere of one of its most emblematic traditions, where faith, art, and emotion fill its streets. However, as every year, the uncertainty regarding the weather during this sacred week becomes a crucial factor that keeps brotherhoods, cofrades, and faithful on edge, hoping to accompany the processions without disruption. Initial weather forecasts are beginning to shape expectations for these significant days. While it is still early to provide definitive data, various specialized portals are starting to offer estimates about the climatic conditions that will mark the development of Semana Santa, especially on important days like Domingo de Ramos (Palm Sunday) and Lunes Santo (Holy Monday).

With ten days remaining until Domingo de Ramos, forecasts provide a small relief to the cofrades and devotees eagerly awaiting the start of Semana Santa in Seville. Although some specialized pages still indicate the possibility of rain on that day, atmospheric instability could extend until the night of Lunes Santo. Meteorologist Samuel Biener from Meteored has explained that an unstable Semana Santa is expected, somewhat cooler than usual in the south of the peninsula and with higher temperatures in the archipelagos. According to Biener, the weather will be very changeable due to the presence of an Atlantic ridge and cold air masses near Spain. This could lead to both anticyclonic blockages and the arrival of several depressions, creating a dynamic environment that may bring rain to various areas of the country.

Current models suggest that a depression will enter on Viernes de Dolores (Friday of Sorrows) afternoon, potentially affecting the start of Semana Santa. However, as of Thursday, April 3, ElTiempo.es predicts that the risk of precipitation will decrease on Sábado Santo (Holy Saturday) and Domingo de Ramos. While instability will still be present, lighter showers are anticipated compared to initial forecasts. If this trend holds, the brotherhoods might proceed without major difficulties on Lunes, Martes, and Miércoles Santo (Holy Tuesday and Holy Wednesday).

Another portal that has released forecasts is Tiempo.com, also known as Meteored. This outlet indicates that a DANA (isolated depression at high levels) will affect the peninsula on Domingo de Ramos and Lunes Santo but anticipates an improvement in the weather in the following days of Semana Santa.

On the other hand, the Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (AEMET), considered the most reliable and official source, has yet to issue a specific prediction for Domingo de Ramos in Seville. AEMET typically publishes warnings with a maximum advance of seven days, meaning there is still no definitive information. Nevertheless, specialists recommend maintaining caution, as ten days before the start, the situation can still change. What seems likely, according to meteorologists, is that the week will be marked by a combination of clear skies and occasional rains. As the days progress, forecasts are expected to gain accuracy. However, early estimates suggest that this Semana Santa could be one of the most variable in recent times.

Seville, with the sky as its backdrop, prepares for one of its most iconic celebrations. Although forecasts remain changeable, the hope among cofrades is strong, as they look to the horizon, trusting that the weather will allow them to experience this celebration intensely and without surprises.

With Semana Santa just around the corner, Seville is closely monitoring weather forecasts. New predictions confirm greater certainty about atmospheric instability, which brings a risk of precipitation. It seems that rain could accompany the early days of the celebrations, from Viernes de Dolores to Martes Santo, with a possible improvement in weather conditions starting on Miércoles Santo.

According to current models, nine days before Domingo de Ramos, rain is expected on Viernes de Dolores with a 51% probability, with temperatures ranging from 14º to 21º. The likelihood of rain increases to 60% on Sábado de Pasión (Passion Saturday) from midday, although temperatures will remain pleasant. Domingo de Ramos could start with a 60% chance of rain in the morning, but the clouds are expected to disperse in the afternoon, with temperatures similar to previous days. On Lunes Santo, temperatures could drop slightly to a maximum of 19º, with clouds and rain expected throughout the day, which could repeat on Martes Santo, although the chance of showers will reduce to 50%. Miércoles Santo is anticipated to show improvement, with sunshine appearing and the risk of rain decreasing to 41%.

Thus, Jueves Santo (Holy Thursday) and Viernes Santo (Good Friday) are expected to be sunny with low rain risk (30% and 24% respectively) and temperatures ranging from 11º to 20º. As the week progresses, many in Seville hope for favorable weather, allowing the traditions of Semana Santa to unfold without interruption.

As the weather changes, it's essential to remain updated. A yellow alert for rain and storms has been issued by AEMET for Seville on Friday, indicating a day characterized by very cloudy skies and thunderstorms from dawn until noon. Showers are expected to leave around 9 liters per square meter around 11:00, transitioning to light precipitation in the afternoon. The maximum temperature for Friday will be similar to Thursday's, around 21 degrees, with minimums around 13 degrees.

On Saturday, a very cloudy day is predicted with light rain from dawn until midday, ceasing around noon. Maximum temperatures will be similar to Friday's, while minimums will drop to 10 degrees. On Sunday, precipitation is likely, with a very cloudy panorama and rain expected throughout the day. Temperatures will remain around 10 and 21 degrees.

As Semana Santa draws near, the anticipation grows among the cofrades and the citizens of Seville. With the hope that the weather will cooperate, they look forward to the celebrations that mark this unique time of year in the city.
