Sevilla Adjusts Three Kings' Parade Date To January 4

Unfavorable weather forecasts lead to historic date change for beloved parade

Sevilla's Three Kings' Parade, known as the Cabalgata de Reyes Magos, will take place on January 4, 2025, instead of its traditional date of January 5. This unprecedented decision was made by the Ateneo de Sevilla due to unfavorable weather forecasts predicting heavy rain for the originally planned date. The change ensures the long-standing tradition continues without interruption, adhering to the hopes and excitement of both children and adults alike.

The Cabalgata de Reyes Magos has been celebrated for over 106 years and holds significant cultural importance for the city of Sevilla. It marks the culmination of the holiday season, where families gather to watch the colorful parade featuring elaborate floats, music, and the joyous distribution of sweets and gifts, embodying the spirit of Epiphany.

Originally, the Ateneo intended to stick to their plans for January 5, stating, "The forecasts announce strong rain at 16:00 and another peak at 20:00, which gives us much uncertainty about whether we can complete the route," explained Manolo Saiz, the director of the Cabalgata. This sentiment highlights both the dedication to maintaining tradition and the practical concern for ensuring the event's success.

The parade is set to start from the Rectorado de la Universidad de Sevilla at 16:15, making its way through various neighborhoods of the city. The planned route extends approximately 9.5 kilometers, highlighting more than 30 streets, and concludes at the University around 22:00. Some of the notable stops include Plaza de Cuba, Plaza de Don Juan de Austria, and the iconic Puente de Triana.

To facilitate access to the parade, public transportation services operated by Tussam will be free on January 5, 2025. This initiative is aimed at ensuring all citizens can partake in this magical celebration without the stress of transport costs. “We want Sevilla to enjoy its Kings' Parade as it deserves; we will be working hard to make January 4 magical,” added Saiz, reinforcing the organization's commitment to community enjoyment.

For 2025, the initial procession of the Heraldo Real will now occur on January 3 at 17:45. This ceremonial event, where the Herald collects letters from children for the Kings, remains integral to the celebrations. Saiz and the Ateneo have coordinated logistics to maintain the original parade timing and schedules, adjusting only the overall dates.

This is not the first occasion when weather has influenced such celebrations. Over the last decades, local organizers have often had to adapt plans, but this marks the first historical adjustment of the Kings' Parade date. Other municipalities across the provinces of Sevilla, Cádiz, and Huelva are similarly advancing their parades, reflecting the shared challenges posed by the forecasts.

The anticipation surrounding the Cabalgata de Reyes Magos is palpable, with families and friends preparing for one of Sevilla's most beloved celebrations. This year’s emphasis on foresight and caution ensures the joy of the festivities is preserved, irrespective of what the weather may bring.

Sevilla's esteemed tradition continues to thrive as engagements from the city and local government join efforts to provide families with memorable experiences. This collaborative spirit is particularly notable, ensuring accessibility and safety for all who wish to partake in this cherished event.

With all preparations underway, Sevillanos and visitors alike are eager for January 4 to arrive, hoping for clear skies and the warm glow of holiday cheer, reminding everyone of the essence of the Three Kings' Parade.
