Severstal has recently embarked on an ambitious project to improve its training and inspection capabilities through the introduction of an innovative augmented reality (AR) platform. This cutting-edge technology aims to streamline equipment diagnostics, enabling operators to conduct repairs and inspections with the assistance of remote experts. The testing of this platform took place at the wire mill within the Severstal-Metiz division and the shot-blasting facility of Severstal's Steel Structures division.
The purpose of the AR training platform is to revolutionize the way Severstal addresses equipment issues, particularly when expert oversight is required. By utilizing AR glasses, operators can share live visuals of their work with experts located off-site, who provide real-time guidance and troubleshooting strategies. This method not only enhances efficiency but also reduces the necessity for experts to be physically present at the site, allowing them to tackle multiple issues across various locations more effectively.
Denis Kolupaev, the Head of R&D at Severstal-Infocom, explained the platform's benefits, stating, "The remote expertise is not just a video call: the expert sees the image just as if they were inspecting the unit personally." This level of interaction offers operators invaluable support, with experts able to leave graphical cues on the operator's display, guiding them through each step of the repair process and outlining specific actions to take. The introduction of QR codes and other digital tools also supplements this process, facilitating the exchange of necessary information such as photographs and diagrams.
Throughout the pilot testing phase, three practical use cases for the platform were identified, potentially paving the way for broader implementation across Severstal's operations. These scenarios include conducting remote setup, diagnostics, and repairs on equipment; calibrations for crane frequency converters; and installations involving steel cables. Kolupaev emphasized the significant time and resource savings the AR technology offers, noting, "We can dramatically reduce the travel burden on our experts, as many tasks can now be handled remotely."
This advancement is being lauded not just as technological progress but as part of Severstal's commitment to enhancing its operational capabilities and environmental responsibility. The company is working to minimize the carbon footprint associated with travel by limiting the need for specialists to be onsite when it’s not necessary.
Alongside this technological boost, Severstal is also focusing on strengthening team dynamics within the organization. This was underscored when the repairs division's director, Sergey Dobrodey, visited the Olenegorsk mining site, primarily to engage with the on-ground team and witness the operational dynamics first-hand. According to Dobrodey, “It was interesting to visit here; my colleagues can now visualize how production is organized in Olenegorsk.” This face-to-face interaction is seen as pivotal for fostering collaboration and communication across various departments.
After touring the Olenegorsk site, Dobrodey engaged with maintenance staff where discussions centered on the upcoming 2025 repair program and how the repairs directorate could assist them. This highlights the company’s drive to optimize its internal processes, ensuring all voices are heard and solutions collaboratively developed.
The combination of technological innovation through the AR platform and initiatives aimed at team cohesion positions Severstal at the forefront of the industry as it navigates through modern challenges. Viktor Kasparov, CEO of Digital Inspector, provided insight on the pilot outcomes, stating, "We obtained valuable experience during pilot operations to implement new functions, enhancing economic effects for clients." This reflection points to the promising horizon for enhancing efficiency and effectiveness within Severstal's operations.
Overall, the blending of expert systems with hands-on training reflects Severstal's readiness to adapt to the current industrial climate, ensuring they remain competitive and resource-efficient. By investing not only in technology but also fostering strong relations within its teams, Severstal is paving the way for sustainable growth and operational excellence, benefiting employees and clients alike.
