Severe Winter Weather Hits St. Louis Metro Area

Transportation services struggle to cope with severe weather conditions as residents advised to stay safe.

ST. LOUIS — Dangerous road conditions and staffing challenges forced Bi-State Development to suspend Metro bus and Call-A-Ride services until at least 8 a.m. on Monday morning, with only MetroLink trains remaining operational. Bi-State Development President and CEO Toby Roach reported nearly ten buses got stuck during the morning commute, leading to the temporary suspension.

“We had some problems getting operators in,” Roach said during a morning news interview. “We just need a little time to catch up.” While MetroLink service continues to run, as operators worked overnight to keep rails clear, Roach emphasized the efforts of Metro Transit employees who are working hard to restore full service, but still require time for road conditions to improve.

Passengers who rely on Metro buses and Call-A-Ride services have been advised to seek alternative transportation, with MetroLink riders cautioned to plan for extra travel time. Call-A-Ride customers with reservations were being contacted directly for updates.

Weather-wise, St. Louis has seen mostly cloudy skies with temperatures hovering around 26 degrees Fahrenheit, expected to drop to 16 degrees overnight. The forecast indicates chances of snow showers beginning on Monday due to northwesterly winds turning on the lake effect snow machine. Temperatures are predicted not to fluctuate significantly, settling mostly around the upper 20s all week.

The National Weather Service warns of wind chill values dropping to near or below zero, adding to the challenges faced by commuters and public transport services. Breezy winds will persist, with gusts exceeding 20 to 25 mph throughout the day.

Looking beyond Monday, the St. Louis area could expect snow showers on Wednesday as another disturbance approaches from Canada. The highs will remain below average, with similar cold conditions extending through the middle of the week. By the end of the week, there could be additional chances of snow as another low-pressure system arrives.

Drivers and transit users alike are urged to remain vigilant and plan accordingly amid these challenging winter weather conditions. The combination of hazardous roads, sub-zero wind chills, and snowfall will require everyone to be cautious and aware of their surroundings. For those relying on Metro services, staying tuned for continuous updates from Bi-State Development is advised.
