Severe Weather Warnings Issued For KwaZulu-Natal

Persistent rainfall raises flooding risks and prompts safety alerts across the province

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has continued to issue weather warnings for parts of KwaZulu-Natal as widespread rainfall persists across the province. On April 16, 2025, a level 5 warning for significant rainfall remains in effect for the eThekwini, iLembe, uMgungundlovu, Ugu, and Harry Gwala districts. Additionally, a level 4 warning has been issued for parts of uThukela, Amajuba, uMzinyathi, King Cetshwayo, and sections of the uMgungundlovu and Harry Gwala districts.

Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi has assured residents that disaster management teams are on high alert and closely monitoring the situation. “The safety of our communities is our priority, and teams are ready to respond to any emergencies that may arise due to the ongoing weather conditions,” stated Buthelezi.

The persistent rainfall has significantly increased the risk of flooding in low-lying areas and informal settlements. Residents are being warned of potential damage to bridges and roads, as well as possible disruptions to essential services such as electricity and water. There are also concerns about the displacement of communities in high-risk areas.

Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and adhere to safety guidelines, which include:

  • Staying indoors and avoiding unnecessary travel;

  • Avoiding the crossing of rivers or swollen streams, especially where water levels are above the ankles;

  • Moving valuable belongings to safer, elevated areas in case of flooding;

  • Relocating livestock to higher ground in rural areas;

  • Immediately abandoning vehicles trapped in rising water and moving to safety.

Officials are calling on the public to remain vigilant and to monitor official channels for weather alerts and emergency updates. The South African Weather Service has issued intensified warnings for significant rainfall, expected to affect several districts including eThekwini, iLembe, uMgungundlovu, Ugu, and Harry Gwala. The rainfall is anticipated to continue battering the province, with a snowfall warning in place for the upcoming Easter weekend.

As of now, disaster management teams are on standby, ready to respond to any emergencies that may arise from the ongoing weather conditions. The public is advised to stay informed and strictly follow instructions from local authorities and emergency services.

In a recent statement, Buthelezi emphasized the importance of vigilance, saying, “Residents in the affected areas are strongly advised to maintain a state of vigilance and continue to adhere to precautions.” The MEC highlighted the risks posed by the rainfall, which include further flooding of roads and settlements, increased risk of damage to bridges, and the potential for community displacement.

Residents have also been cautioned to remain indoors, avoid unnecessary travel on roads, and to stay away from rivers and swollen streams. “If your vehicle becomes trapped in floodwaters, abandon it immediately and seek higher ground,” Buthelezi advised. He also urged residents to ensure that valuable items within buildings are moved to a safe place above anticipated flood levels.

Authorities are preparing for possible snowfall over the Easter weekend as a cold front approaches the province. The recent weather events have already claimed the lives of more than 12 individuals and displaced over 100 people in KwaZulu-Natal, highlighting the severity of the situation.

As the weather continues to pose a serious threat, residents are reminded to heed the warnings and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property. The South African Weather Service continues to monitor the situation closely and will issue updates as necessary.

With heavy rains expected to persist, the situation remains fluid, and residents are encouraged to stay tuned for further announcements from local authorities. The ongoing weather conditions have already led to significant challenges in the region, and the community's resilience will be tested in the coming days.

In summary, KwaZulu-Natal is facing a challenging period as it grapples with severe weather conditions. The combination of heavy rainfall and the potential for snowfall presents a multifaceted threat to residents, infrastructure, and essential services. As the province braces for continued rainfall, it is crucial for individuals to stay informed, follow safety guidelines, and remain prepared for any emergency situations that may arise.
