NEXCO West Japan has issued warnings of severe snow and low temperatures expected to affect wide areas across Western Japan from February 4th through February 7th, potentially leading to highway closures.
The Nihon Expressway Company (NEXCO) confirmed the predictive closures are aimed at ensuring safety, as adverse weather conditions may lead to hazardous driving situations. Local forecasts predict significant snowfall and icy roads, particularly impacting Kyushu and the Kinki region.
According to NEXCO West Japan officials, "We will implement preventive closures as necessary to avoid large vehicle traffic congestion during heavy snowfall." Their advance measures are prompted by the expected severe weather which could see snow accumulating not only on elevated sections of highways but also on level grounds, creating challenges for travelers.
The company has outlined specific highways where closures are most likely, including the Hokuriku Expressway from Maruoka IC (Fukui, Sakai City) to Nagahama IC (Shiga, Nagahama City) starting from the afternoon of February 4th, as well as sections of the Hanwa Expressway, the Yuasa-Gobo Road, and others on February 5th.
Authorities are urging caution for all motorists, particularly those who might need to travel during the impacted days. They recommend avoiding unnecessary travel to regions expecting heavy snow. If travel is unavoidable, drivers should prepare adequately: Carry winter tires or chains, stock supplies like food and water, keep their fuel tank filled, and regularly check weather and road conditions.
NEXCO West Japan, along with the Kinki Development Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, have stressed the importance of safety during this weather event. Their comprehensive guidelines are aimed at minimizing travel disruptions and keep drivers informed.
With heavy snow and treacherous driving conditions looming, residents are advised to heed the forecasts and stay updated on road conditions and any potential highway closures. Preparation and vigilance are key to ensuring safety during this hazardous period.
