Severe Weather Warning Issued For Brandenburg And Berlin

Residents prepare for thunderstorms and heavy rain as temperatures drop this weekend.

As the week draws to a close, residents of Brandenburg and Berlin are bracing for a significant shift in weather conditions. On Friday, May 2, 2025, a high-pressure system that has dominated the region is expected to weaken, giving way to a cold front approaching from the north. This change is set to bring with it a heightened risk of severe weather, including thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.

According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the transition from warm, summery air to cooler temperatures will commence in the afternoon. The forecast indicates that local heavy showers and thunderstorms could develop, particularly in the central and southern parts of Brandenburg and the Berlin area. These storms may pose a risk of severe weather, with the DWD warning of gusts of wind reaching up to 100 km/h, classified as force 10 on the Beaufort scale.

"From Friday afternoon into the night, local showers and thunderstorms will move through the Berlin area," the DWD stated, highlighting the potential for intense weather. The agency has specifically noted that between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., heavy thunderstorms are expected to roll through the capital, bringing with them not only strong winds but also significant rainfall. Localized downpours could deliver around 15 liters of rain per square meter in a short period, with small-grained hail also a possibility.

In some areas, the storms could escalate further, with the DWD indicating that gusts could reach hurricane force, up to 105 km/h, which is classified as wind force 11. This level of wind is considered severe and could lead to hazardous conditions. The DWD emphasized that while thunderstorms are anticipated to begin in the afternoon, they may not fully subside until the early hours of Saturday.

Temperatures on Friday are expected to peak between 25 to 29 degrees Celsius before the cold front arrives, causing a noticeable drop in temperature, particularly in northern Brandenburg. As the afternoon progresses, winds are forecasted to shift from southwest to northwest, becoming increasingly moderate, especially near showers.

As night falls, the weather is expected to remain cloudy with diminishing showers and thunderstorms gradually tapering off from the north. Overnight lows are predicted to range from 8 to 12 degrees Celsius, with light winds prevailing, aside from the occasional gust.

Looking ahead to Saturday, May 3, 2025, the weather will shift to a cooler and more stable pattern. The DWD forecasts a cloudy to heavily overcast day, with dry conditions prevailing for most of the day. However, as the evening approaches, there is a chance for localized, intensified rain showers. Maximum temperatures are expected to drop significantly, ranging from 16 to 20 degrees Celsius, with the southern parts of Brandenburg possibly reaching up to 22 degrees.

Sunday will continue the trend of cooler temperatures, with highs only reaching between 14 and 16 degrees Celsius. The forecast indicates that many clouds will linger, and there may be some light rain in the southern half of Brandenburg, which should clear by morning.

In summary, the transition from a warm, sunny week to a stormy weekend is causing concern among residents. The DWD's warnings serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of spring weather in the region. With severe weather conditions on the horizon, locals are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
