Severe Weather Set To Hit Italy This Weekend

Forecasts predict rain, snow, and unstable conditions across the country.

Italy is bracing itself for significant weather changes as early 2025 sees the arrival of disturbances bringing rain and snow, particularly impacting various regions across the country. According to meteorological forecasts, conditions are set to deteriorate starting February 22, 2025, with rain expected to dominate over the weekend and through the beginning of the following week.

The initial system will move across Italy, bringing unsettled weather characterized by rainfall, thunderstorms, and even potential snowfall at higher elevations. Lorenzo Badellino, a meteorologist at 3BMeteo, has pointed to the instability forecast for Liguria over the weekend, stating, "Nonostante la presenza dell’anticiclone alle latitudini centro-meridionali del Continente - spiega Badellino -, infiltrazioni di correnti umide meridionali all’altezza del Tirreno provocheranno giornate spesso nuvolose sulla Liguria, sia nel weekend che all’inizio della prossima settimana," which translates to: "Despite the presence of anticyclones at central-southern latitudes of the continent, inflows of humid southern currents at sea level along the Tyrrhenian will lead to often cloudy days over Liguria, both during the weekend and at the start of the next week."

On Saturday, February 22, light rain is anticipated, particularly affecting areas between Genoa and Spezia. The forecast indicates prevalent cloud cover, but there may be glimpses of sun along the extreme western coast on Sunday. Badellino notes this will mostly be dependent on remaining cloud formations over the rest of the region. Besides, he mentions the stability of temperatures, projected to hover around 10°C for minimum and about 13°C for maximum levels, particularly around Genoa.

By Monday, February 24, weather conditions are expected to be inconsistent, with continued chances of rain, especially as lighter, humid winds from the southwest bring additional cloudiness and minor rainfall to the region. Badellino elaborates by stating, "Le temperature - conclude Badellino - si manterranno pressoché stabili nel weekend e a Genova oscilleranno intorno ai 10°C le minime, 13°C le massime," which translates to: "Temperatures are expected to remain stable over the weekend, with minimums around 10°C and maximums near 13°C in Genoa."

The broader impacts of this weather system stretch throughout Italy. Between February 24 and 25, strong instability is expected region-wide as additional low-pressure systems engage with existing conditions. The weather will include heavy local storms and possibly hail, as well as snowfall on the Alps, which may reach down to mid-elevations. This shift denotes not merely temperature drops but also changing atmospheric pressure and strong, often rotating winds.

Cold fronts from the Atlantic are influencing these events significantly, creating significant weather disturbances across the Mediterranean. Such conditions are typical for this time of the year, with the Mediterranean vortex often cooking up heavy, unstable weather across the peninsula. Rain showers and localized thunderstorms are expected to become more commonplace.

By the close of the weekend, models suggest there could be temporary improvement, yet analysts remain skeptical about persistently dry weather, as another Atlantic disturbance looms on the horizon, poised to affect Italy again. Indeed, as weather experts at 3BMeteo conclude, no straightforward resolution appears imminent, indicating more fluctuations could follow.

Italy's early 2025 weather forecasts highlight the importance of tracking weather patterns and preparing for the potential impacts of rain, snow, and changing temperatures—all reminders of the ever-changing Mediterranean climate.
