Severe Weather Hits Kuban With Heavy Rains And Hail

Krasnodar braces for flooding as storms peak on April 25 and 26

On April 25, 2025, residents of the Kuban region in southern Russia are bracing for severe weather as a massive frontal cloud cover brings heavy rains, thunderstorms, and hail. According to the Phobos weather center, precipitation levels are expected to reach 10-20 mm per day, with local areas experiencing even heavier downpours.

The weather in Krasnodar, the capital of the region, is predicted to deteriorate rapidly in the morning hours. By midday, the region will likely experience its peak of inclement weather, with thunderstorms and hail anticipated. Forecasts indicate that the intensity of rainfall could reach between 8-11 mm within just three hours, leading to significant moisture accumulation.

By the evening of April 25, up to 25 mm of rain may fall on Krasnodar, an amount typically gathered over two weeks in April. This sudden influx of water raises concerns about local flooding, particularly in low-lying areas. As noted by meteorologists, "local flooding cannot be avoided" given the expected volume of rain.

Moreover, the Kuban region is under a storm warning due to the adverse weather conditions. The situation is expected to worsen overnight and into the morning of April 26, with forecasters predicting continued heavy showers, thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds reaching up to 20-22 m/s.

As the storm progresses, river levels in several districts, including Apsheronsk, Belorechensk, Labinsk, Mostovsk, Kurganinsk, Otradnensk, Abinsk, Seversk, Krymsk, and Tuapse, are expected to rise. This increase in water levels could pose additional risks to infrastructure and local communities. The cities of Goryachy Klyuch and Gelendzhik are also on alert for potential flooding.

In addition to heavy rain, residents should prepare for a drop in temperatures following the storm. While coastal areas will not face frost, the nights are expected to be chilly, and mountainous regions may see temperatures dip below zero as April comes to a close. According to Svetlana Popova, the deputy head of the Kuban Hydrometeorological Center, "very strong rains are expected on April 25, with the peak of rainfall occurring overnight and into the morning of April 26."

"A lot of water will be released, and the coast will bear the brunt of it," she added, emphasizing the need for residents to stay vigilant. The anticipated rainfall is significant enough to disrupt daily life, and authorities are urging caution.

In Krasnodar, variable cloudiness and brief rain are also expected, with heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms throughout the day. Fog is likely to develop in low-lying areas and near water bodies, further complicating visibility and travel conditions.

Weather forecasts indicate that temperatures will range from +11 to +13 degrees Celsius at night, with daytime highs between +16 and +18 degrees Celsius. In the northern parts of the region, temperatures may drop to between +13 and +18 degrees Celsius.

In Anapa, brief rain is forecasted, with heavy downpours expected in the morning and throughout the day, along with possible thunderstorms and fog. Similar conditions are anticipated in Gelendzhik, where residents should prepare for brief but intense rainfall.

In Goryachy Klyuch, the weather is expected to be mostly dry at night, but brief rain and thunderstorms are likely during the day. Fog may also affect visibility in the mornings.

Meanwhile, Novorossiysk and Sochi will experience brief rain, with heavy showers expected in the morning and throughout the day. Thunderstorms are also on the horizon, and residents should be cautious of the potential for flash flooding.

The weather system affecting the Kuban region is part of a broader pattern of unstable weather across southern Russia, with meteorologists warning that such conditions may become more frequent due to changing climate patterns.

As the storm approaches, local authorities are advising residents to stay indoors during peak conditions and to monitor weather updates closely. Emergency services are on standby to respond to any incidents related to the severe weather.

In summary, the Kuban region is preparing for a significant weather event that could lead to localized flooding, strong winds, and a sharp drop in temperatures. Residents are urged to take necessary precautions and stay informed.
