Severe Weather DANA To Hit Southern Spain This Weekend

Authorities prepare for heavy rains, snow, and flooding with weather alerts across regions.

Severe Weather System DANA Set to Impact Southern Spain

A powerful DANA weather system, also known as isolated depression at high levels, is preparing to make its presence felt across southern Spain, particularly targeting the regions of Andalusia. Early warnings from meteorologists indicate this severe weather phenomenon could bring heavy rains, snowfall, and sharp temperature drops, creating conditions ripe for potential flooding and other weather-related issues.

Meteorologist Mario Picazo has been vocal about the approaching DANA, asserting it will transform the current weather patterns as early as this weekend. Picazo noted, "Although the start of the week may seem calm with sunny intervals, the situation is projected to change drastically by Saturday with the DANA moving in. We need to be vigilant as rain, possibly heavy, is expected to lash the southern areas of the country, especially Andalusia and the Alborán Sea." This sentiment is echoed by the Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), which has issued yellow alerts due to the looming meteorological instability.

The early days of the week will see unstable weather, with moderate to intense precipitation anticipated throughout parts of southern Spain, including Ceuta and Melilla. Initially, the weather is influenced by cold air at altitude, which has settled over the Mediterranean region. This instability presents itself as rain and potential snowfall, leading various regions, especially those along the southern coast, to prepare for the impacts. Picazo continued, "Although conditions will stabilize mid-week, we must remain cautious as the DANA’s effects will be aggressive by the weekend."

Between Tuesday and Friday, the high-pressure system presently gripping much of Spain will facilitate clearer skies and more stable conditions, but models indicate this will be but a temporary reprieve. Temperatures will remain typical for this time of year, with cold mornings transitioning to milder afternoons. By Friday, warnings are expected to escalate as new cold air begins to infiltrate from the north of Europe, prompting concerns about more severe weather as the DANA arrives.

AEMET has preemptively warned municipalities across southern Spain to brace for potentially strong winter storms marked by torrential rainfall and extensive snowfall above 1,300 to 1,400 meters. This includes recommendations for local populations to stay informed about advisories issued via official AEMET channels. Leaders from affected regions have already mobilized response plans, with the municipal government of Málaga triggering its Emergency Committee amid forecasts predicting 80 liters of rainfall per square meter within 12 hours.

Regional authorities stress the importance of preparation. Mayor Torremolinos, known for its heavy tourist influx, suggested classes may be canceled to protect students and families from hazardous travel conditions. "We advise residents to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly to areas severely impacted by rain and snow accumulation," the municipality urged via social media. Emergency services have reported at least 75 incidents tied to recent weather activity, creating hazards for civilians across affected areas.

On the ground, precautions are increasing with the potential for widespread flooding and landslides, particularly concerning the rugged terrains of southern Spain. AEMET has recommended vigilant monitoring of updates, as conditions can shift rapidly as the DANA approaches. Regions like Aragón, Galicia, and Ceuta are also under yellow alert due to anticipated adverse weather, which includes potential freezing temperatures and elevated surf along the coasts of Málaga and Granada.

The AEMET has also warned of growing rain activity moving from the Atlantic, accompanied by atmospheric instability from the eastern Mediterranean, which is expected to affect various provinces leading up to the weekend. Those living near rivers, or separate from higher elevations should particularly heed alerts for possible flash flooding and river overflow.

Looking upwards, the mountain ranges of Sierra Nevada stand on high alert, with forecasts indicating significant snow accumulation—a two-centimeter layer expected over 24 hours. While this transformation could prove beneficial for the region’s ski resorts, the potential for travel disruption is notable as roads become increasingly treacherous.

Forecasts will continue to evolve as the week progresses, with AEMET stating, "The DANA poses serious threats and could lead to severe disruptions if the weather predictions hold true. We urge everyone to take this situation seriously and remain prepared for quick changes to the forecast." Residents and local authorities must brace for whatever weather the DANA may bring, achieving readiness for response and recovery as necessary.
