Severe Weather Conditions Hit North Macedonia This Weekend

Thunderstorms, heavy rain, and possible snow forecast as temperatures drop dramatically.

Severe weather warnings are now active across North Macedonia as the nation experiences fluctuated weather conditions. According to meteorologist Slavcho Poposki, local rains with potential thunderstorms are expected to persist through the weekend, creating conditions for localized, heavy downpours.

The weather forecast indicated fluctuated weather characterized by intermittent rainfalls across various locations. From the early morning hours of Saturday, March 1, 2025, residents of Skopje should anticipate occasional rain showers, with potential downpours expected, especially concentrated across the plains. On this day, daytime temperatures are projected to reach between 7 to 16 degrees Celsius, which is above average for this time of year.

Poposki added, "Temperatures will rise to around 15 degrees Celsius today (February 28) in Skopje, marking unusually high levels for early March. Following this, current weather patterns will likely keep these higher temperatures prevailing, at least temporarily."

On Sunday, March 2, the situation will shift as cold air from the north is predicted to advance, causing rain at higher altitudes above 1400 to 1500 meters to transition to snow. This drop will set the stage for sleet at lower elevations potentially dropping to 1,000 meters, particularly affecting areas located to the northwest, north, and northeast of Macedonia.

The Hellenic Meteorological Service added, "Expect sporadic snowfall during Saturday evening, especially after the temperatures fall late afternoon. By Sunday night, we predict progressively lower temperatures with maximums between 3 to 11 degrees Celsius, creating conditions for moderate snowfalls even in higher residential areas."

Wind conditions are also expected to intensify, with moderate gusts from the north adding to the chilly weatherscape. On Sunday, authorities will monitor conditions closely due to these atmospheric disturbances, which may also bring thunderstorms and hail.

This shift is expected as weather conditions across North Macedonia have demonstrated extreme variability, leading to some potentially hazardous conditions throughout various spots. "Locally intense atmospheric processes could bring thunderstorms and hail," stated the meteorological authority.

Residents are advised to remain vigilant, especially under conditions where thunderstorm activity may arise alongside heavy downpours. Reports note already existing concerns for minor flooding due to anticipated rain accumulations.

For Skopje, Saturday’s forecast includes similar patterns of occasional rain, persisting possible thunderstorms, and localized heavy rainfall as the initial warm spell gives way to the advancing cold front. Registered weather conditions throughout the beginning of March will be pivotal for both winter remnants and sudden warmer spells.

The National Meteorological Agency (UHMK) has indicated their commitment to keeping the public informed as weather patterns become more erratic. "We remain proactive, and as new developments occur, residents can expect timely updates on changing conditions resulting from both warm and cold weather fronts," official reports highlight.

Essentially, the residents should brace themselves for extremely varied conditions throughout North Macedonia over the next few days as winter greets early spring with various challenges. Until then, the advice remains: stay informed, stay prepared, and take necessary precautions. With the weather’s unpredictability, every precautionary step can contribute significantly toward safety outcomes during these severe weather warnings.
