Severe Weather Alerts Issued Across Spain For May 8

Widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall expected in multiple provinces as AEMET warns of dangerous conditions.

On Thursday, May 8, 2025, Spain is bracing for a significant weather event as widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and even hail are expected to sweep across various regions. According to the Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (AEMET), the eastern third of the peninsula, the Mesetas, and Galicia are likely to experience the brunt of these storms, prompting alerts across 18 provinces.

Valencia, in particular, will be under an orange alert for storms, indicating the potential for severe weather. The alert is a response to forecasts predicting intense thunderstorms and heavy rainfall that could lead to dangerous conditions. This orange alert signifies that residents should be particularly cautious, especially in areas prone to flooding.

In addition to Valencia, provinces including Alicante, Castellón, Almería, Teruel, Albacete, Cuenca, Guadalajara, Barcelona, and Tarragona will also be under various weather alerts ranging from yellow to orange. Notably, the Sierra de Madrid will see alerts specifically for thunderstorms, while Lugo, Ourense, and Pontevedra in Galicia are on alert solely for rain.

The weather instability is attributed to a cold air mass moving into the region, transitioning into a DANA (isolated high-level depression), which is expected to destabilize the atmosphere further. AEMET warns that rainfall could reach up to 15 liters per square meter in just one hour in some areas, particularly in Lugo and Ourense.

As for temperatures, a mixed bag is expected across the country. While northern and southeastern regions might see slight increases in maximum temperatures, the southwestern parts, including the lower Ebro and Andalusia, will experience moderate drops. Minimum temperatures will rise notably in the northern half of the peninsula, with significant increases noted in the Iberian region.

In Tarragona, the situation mirrors that of Valencia, with a yellow alert activated for rain and storms. The forecast indicates cloudy intervals from dawn, evolving into a stormy atmosphere by the afternoon. Maximum temperatures in Tarragona are expected to hover around 19 degrees Celsius, with minimums rising to about 12 degrees.

Friday, May 9, 2025, is expected to bring similar weather patterns, with cloudy skies and storms continuing throughout the morning. Conditions will begin to clear slightly by midday, but the risk of thunderstorms remains. The maximum temperatures will remain consistent with those of Thursday.

The weekend forecast is also concerning, as another DANA system is predicted to enter the region, bringing additional rain and thunderstorms. Saturday may see light rain, while Sunday is expected to have partly cloudy skies with sporadic light rain.

In Ourense, the yellow alert for rain will extend to the entire province on Friday, with expectations of precipitation exceeding 15 liters per square meter on Thursday. The weather will continue to worsen, with more rain and storms anticipated as the DANA settles into the Atlantic region.

As the weather unfolds, AEMET advises residents to stay informed and prepared for rapidly changing conditions. With alerts in place across so many provinces, the potential for severe weather is high, and safety precautions should be taken seriously.

In summary, the weather across Spain is set to shift dramatically, with thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and potential hail affecting many areas. With alerts issued for various provinces, it’s crucial for residents to remain vigilant and heed warnings from weather authorities.
