Severe Weather Alerts Issued Across Spain Amid Storms

AEMET warns of heavy rain and strong winds affecting 15 regions this weekend

The Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (AEMET) has activated an orange alert for storms in Aragón, Castilla-La Mancha, and the Comunidad Valenciana on May 2, 2025. This alert indicates a "significant danger" due to expected severe weather conditions, including strong winds and large hail. Alongside this, a yellow alert has been issued for rain across these regions and 12 others, with some areas anticipating rainfall accumulations of up to 40 liters per square meter.

In Aragón, the orange alert specifically targets Teruel, where storms may produce wind gusts exceeding 70 kilometers per hour and hail larger than 2 centimeters. The yellow alert in Aragón also covers Huesca and Zaragoza, where rainfall accumulations could range between 15 and 20 liters in one hour, accompanied by possible hail.

Castilla-La Mancha, particularly in Albacete, Cuenca, and Guadalajara, has also been placed under an orange alert due to storms that may bring hail larger than 2 centimeters and very strong wind gusts. Meanwhile, Ciudad Real and Toledo are experiencing a yellow alert for storms.

In the Comunidad Valenciana, Valencia and Castellón are affected by the alerts, with an orange warning in the interior of Valencia for storms that could bring wind gusts over 70 kilometers per hour and hail larger than 2 centimeters. The southern part of Castellón has been placed under a yellow alert.

Further south, Andalucía has issued a yellow alert in Huelva for rain up to 15 liters in one hour, with storms that may include hail and winds reaching 70 kilometers per hour. Jaén's regions of Cazorla and Segura are under similar warnings, with expected rainfall accumulations of up to 15 liters per hour.

Asturias and Cantabria are also experiencing yellow alerts for rain, with expected accumulations of 15 liters per square meter in one hour and storms that could bring hail. In Castilla y León, the yellow alert is statewide, with similar rainfall accumulations and potential for strong winds and hail.

Cataluña has a yellow alert concentrated on the coast of Barcelona and Tarragona due to rain that may yield 20 liters per square meter in one hour, while Extremadura has alerts for areas in Cáceres and Badajoz for similar rainfall accumulations.

In Galicia, a yellow alert has been issued for accumulated rainfall of 15 liters per square meter, and the Comunidad de Madrid is also under a yellow alert, with similar rainfall expectations and storm conditions.

Meanwhile, the Región de Murcia’s yellow alert only affects the highlands and northwest, where rain could reach 15 liters per square meter in one hour, alongside storms possibly bringing hail larger than 2 centimeters. Navarra and País Vasco are similarly affected, with yellow alerts for rainfall and storms.

As the weather system progresses, the AEMET warns that the storm could lead to significant impacts across many regions. Travelers are advised to check flight statuses due to potential disruptions caused by the storm, according to Aena.

On this same day, the weather has already begun to affect festivities in Madrid, where the Dos de Mayo celebrations were marked by rain and interruptions. The institutional act was held outdoors for the first time, but the weather led to the cancellation of the military parade, which has sparked tensions between the city government and the national administration.

The ongoing Atlantic storm is expected to bring unstable weather through the weekend, with widespread cloudiness and precipitation across the peninsula. The AEMET has urged residents in affected areas to take precautions against severe weather, including avoiding travel during storms and ensuring that drainage systems are clear.

In Extremadura, the Centro de Atención de Urgencias y Emergencias 112 has activated a yellow alert for rain in the Siberia area of Badajoz and the Villuercas and Montánchez regions in Cáceres. This alert will remain in effect until midnight on May 3, 2025. Residents are advised to monitor local conditions closely and to prepare for possible flooding and other storm-related impacts.

As rainfall continues to accumulate, some areas in Extremadura have already reported significant precipitation. Herrera del Duque emerged as the rainiest town in the region, recording 26.8 liters per square meter by midday. Other towns such as Puerto Rey, Azuaga, and Guadalupe also reported notable rainfall amounts.

Wind speeds in some places have reached alarming levels, with Fuente de Cantos registering gusts of 80 kilometers per hour. Local authorities are urging residents to stay vigilant, especially in areas prone to flooding or landslides.

With all these factors in play, the AEMET continues to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary. The public is encouraged to heed warnings and stay informed about changing weather conditions throughout the weekend.
