Severe Weather Alerts Issued Across Jharkhand

Orange alert for thunderstorms and hailstorms as residents experience welcome rain relief

As the weather in Jharkhand takes a dramatic turn, the state's meteorological department has issued a series of alerts for thunderstorms, lightning, and potential hailstorms. This comes as residents experience a welcome respite from the heat due to recent rainfall.

On April 14, 2025, an orange alert was issued specifically for eastern Jharkhand, signaling the likelihood of severe weather conditions including rapid lightning and wind speeds that could reach up to 60 kilometers per hour. The alert covers several districts, including East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum, Sahibganj, Godda, Pakur, and Jamtara, where residents are advised to seek shelter as conditions worsen.

Ranchi, the state capital, experienced significant lightning activity on April 13, although the rainfall was minimal. Godda recorded the highest precipitation with 26 millimeters, while light rain was also noted in East and West Singhbhum. The weather department has cautioned that thunderstorms could develop in these areas, particularly in the evening hours.

According to Abhishek Anand, a scientist at the Ranchi weather center, a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal is influencing the current weather patterns in Jharkhand. This system is expected to bring about more storms and rainfall over the coming days.

“The cyclonic circulation is responsible for the weather change we are witnessing,” Anand explained. “We expect thunderstorms and lightning in many districts, especially in the eastern regions. It’s crucial for people to stay alert and take necessary precautions.”

In addition to the orange alert, a yellow alert has been issued for other districts, including Gumla, Lohardaga, Koderma, Giridih, Palamu, Ramgarh, and Simdega, where wind speeds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour are anticipated. These areas may also experience thunderstorms, although the intensity is expected to be lower than in the orange alert zones.

In the past 24 hours, Ranchi recorded a temperature drop, with maximum temperatures falling to 32.1 degrees Celsius, nearly 3.8 degrees below normal. Other districts like Jamshedpur have reported similar decreases, with maximum temperatures around 34.5 degrees.

The weather department has predicted that the current conditions will persist through April 16, 2025, with ongoing chances of rain and storms. Residents are advised to remain indoors during severe weather and avoid open spaces where they could be exposed to lightning.

Furthermore, the IMD has indicated that hailstorms are likely in the eastern parts of the state on April 14. Central and northeastern districts may also face thunderstorms with gusty winds, creating a potentially hazardous situation for outdoor activities.

In Ranchi and surrounding areas, the pleasant weather brought by recent rains has provided a much-needed break from the oppressive heat. The rainfall has not only cooled the atmosphere but has also added a refreshing quality to the air. The sudden change in weather has been a relief for many, with residents enjoying the cooler temperatures.

As the weather continues to evolve, the department has issued advisories to ensure public safety. They recommend that people avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during storms, stay clear of weak structures, and be cautious of falling branches during high winds.

Looking ahead, the weather forecast suggests that light rain and thunderstorms could continue until April 20, 2025. Residents should remain vigilant as the situation develops, with the potential for further alerts as conditions change.

In summary, Jharkhand's weather is undergoing a significant shift, with alerts in place for thunderstorms and hailstorms. The cyclonic circulation is expected to keep the state on alert for the next several days, prompting residents to stay informed and prepared for changing weather conditions.
