A yellow weather alert has been issued for the entire Tuscany region due to intense winds expected on Sunday, April 6, 2025. The alert was announced by the Unified Operational Room of the Regional Civil Protection and will be in effect from 12:00 PM throughout the day. While Saturday, April 5, 2025, reported no significant issues, a rapid intensification of winds from the Northeast is anticipated starting late Sunday morning, with gusts potentially reaching speeds between 60 and 80 km/h.
This weather phenomenon will affect all areas of Tuscany, with even stronger gusts expected in the Apennine reliefs, in the leeward areas located in high hills, along the coast, and in the Archipelago. Additionally, brief thunderstorms may occur in the central-southern regions of the area, including the provinces of Arezzo, Siena, Grosseto, the lower Pisan area, and Livorno.
Meanwhile, the Civil Protection Department has also issued a yellow weather alert for hydrogeological, hydraulic, and thunderstorm risks across four regions: Abruzzo, Basilicata, and sectors of Molise and Calabria. The latest bulletin indicates that from the early hours of Sunday, strong northern winds, with gale-force gusts, are expected in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, and Tuscany. This will extend in the morning to Abruzzo and subsequently to Umbria, Lazio, and Molise, with possible storm surges along exposed coasts.
In Calabria, the regions facing ordinary criticality for hydraulic risk include the Northern Ionian and Tyrrhenian slopes. For thunderstorm risk, Abruzzo, Basilicata, and Molise are also on alert. The cold front expected to arrive from the Balkans will bring a significant drop in temperatures, with forecasts indicating a decrease of 6-8 degrees below seasonal averages. Snowfall is also possible on the Apennines at medium-low altitudes.
After enjoying a mild Saturday, Italy is bracing for a drastic change in the weather scenario as a cold air mass sweeps across the country. This sudden shift is attributed to a cyclonic vortex moving from the Baltic regions towards the Balkans, which will influence Italy's weather significantly. Rain and thunderstorms are expected, alongside a notable drop in temperatures, bringing a near-winter climate.
Starting from late Saturday evening and into the early hours of Sunday, the first signs of this change will emerge, with clouds rolling in over eastern northern regions, particularly between Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto. Sunday will mark a decisive meteorological turning point, as the cold air masses break into the country, manifesting through a strong and tense Bora wind.
Contrary to the sunny and mild Saturday, Sunday will be characterized by rain, thunderstorms, and even hailstorms in certain regions. The most surprising element will be the temperature collapse, with some areas experiencing drops of 8-9°C compared to the previous day.
In northern regions, irregular cloud cover is anticipated, spreading from east to west. Weak and isolated rain showers may affect lower Friuli, lower Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, and parts of lower Lombardy in the morning. By afternoon and evening, the likelihood of isolated showers will increase in Liguria and Piedmont, particularly in western Piedmont. Intermittent showers are also expected in lower Piedmont, with a 40% probability.
Brief thunderstorms accompanied by local hailstorms are possible, especially in inland Liguria and Romagna. Snow may also make an appearance on the Apennines and western Alps, with snow levels rapidly declining, potentially dropping below 1000 meters.
As the day progresses, the most active part of the disturbance will concentrate on the Center and South, with more probable and widespread phenomena expected in the afternoon, particularly along the Adriatic side and southern regions like Campania, Basilicata, and central-northern Calabria. In these areas, the probability and spread of precipitation will increase, along with the risk of intense thunderstorms and hailstorms.
In the Marches, the sky will be very cloudy or overcast with showers and thunderstorms expected between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM, with a chance of hail. These conditions will extend rapidly to Abruzzo and the Tyrrhenian regions by the afternoon, with isolated phenomena still possible, especially in Campania.
Snowfall will also occur on the Apennines, with snow levels dropping rapidly below 1,200 meters. An improvement in weather conditions is anticipated in the central Adriatic regions by mid-afternoon and in the Tyrrhenian regions by evening.
In southern regions, heavy cloud cover with showers and thunderstorms is expected by early afternoon, particularly in Molise, Gargano, and inland Campania, with rapid propagation throughout the afternoon to the rest of Campania, Basilicata, Salento, and Calabria by evening. Sicily will also be affected by the disturbance later in the day, with thunderstorms likely to bring hail.
Temperatures are expected to plummet, with drops of 8-9°C compared to Saturday. The return of frosts and freezes is likely, particularly in basins, valleys, and plains, especially in Central and Northern Italy, on Monday and Tuesday.
Starting Sunday morning, strong winds will be recorded on the middle and upper Adriatic, with Bora gusts potentially reaching 100 km/h in the Trieste area. Winds will also intensify significantly along the Tyrrhenian coast and lower Adriatic by the afternoon and evening, with seas transitioning from rough to very rough, possibly becoming agitated along exposed coasts.
In summary, Italy is set to experience a tumultuous Sunday characterized by severe weather, particularly in the Center-South, marked by a rapid drop in temperatures and intense northern winds. By Monday, northern and Adriatic regions will face temperature decreases of up to ten degrees, signaling a return to winter-like conditions across much of the country.
