Severe Traffic Accident Causes Major Delays On A620

A morning collision leads to hours of traffic chaos and injuries in Saarbrücken.

Saarbrücken – A severe traffic accident occurred on the A620 towards Saarlouis on Tuesday morning, April 8, 2025, causing significant disruptions for commuters. The incident took place between the Saarbrücken-Gersweiler and Saarbrücken-Klarenthal junctions, leading to a complete closure of the carriageway.

The accident, which happened at 7:34 AM, initially appeared to be a minor rear-end collision. Police reports suggested that it would be quickly resolved, with expectations that the road would be reopened within 20 minutes. However, as the situation unfolded, it became clear that the initial assessments were overly optimistic.

According to a spokesperson from the Saarbrücken police, the collision occurred near the Gersweiler Bridge, and the subsequent events contributed to a major traffic jam stretching approximately eight kilometers behind the St. Arnual junction. "The drivers have to navigate like they’re playing slalom," the spokesperson described the challenging conditions on the highway.

As traffic began to build up, the salvage of the damaged vehicle was delayed due to the late arrival of the towing service. Compounding the issues, two additional vehicles broke down in the traffic jam, further exacerbating the situation. Many drivers found themselves stuck for nearly two hours, with the jam extending to eight kilometers at its peak.

By around 10:15 AM, the situation began to improve as a total of four vehicles were finally removed from the highway by towing services. Despite the easing of traffic, the left lane remained closed for ongoing safety checks, and the situation was still far from ideal for commuters.

As of the latest reports, at least one person sustained minor injuries in the accident and was transported to a hospital for further examination. The property damage to the vehicles involved remains unspecified, but it is expected to be significant.

The police urged all motorists to avoid the affected section and to seek alternative routes if possible. The traffic disruptions not only affected those directly involved in the accident but also had a ripple effect on the morning commute for many in the Saarbrücken area.

In addition to the A620 incident, a separate issue arose on the A6 due to a burning vehicle, further complicating the morning rush hour for drivers in the region. Authorities were quick to respond to both incidents, but the cumulative effect of these traffic events led to considerable delays.

As the day progressed, updates from the police indicated that while the situation was improving, drivers should remain cautious and attentive to ongoing traffic advisories. With the morning rush hour typically bringing heavy traffic, the combination of these incidents created a perfect storm of delays and frustration for many.

Motorists are advised to stay informed through traffic reports and to plan their journeys accordingly to avoid similar situations in the future. The community's patience is appreciated as authorities work to ensure the safety and efficiency of the roads.
