Severe Thunderstorms Expected In Bangladesh This Weekend

The weather department warns of rain and thunderstorms across the country on March 20 and 21.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has released a weather forecast indicating a chance of thunderstorms and rain across the country, particularly on Thursday, March 20, and Friday, March 21, 2025. Despite the expectation of rainfall, the weather in the next 24 hours before that remains primarily dry, according to meteorologist Kh. Hafizur Rahman.

The forecast suggests that between 9 AM on March 20, 2025, and the following 24 hours, areas such as Dhaka, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong, Mymensingh, and Sylhet could see temporary gusty winds and thunderstorms with lightning. In addition, the regions may experience drizzling rain, according to the department's report.

Rahman conveyed that for the next 24 hours, the weather across the country will predominantly be dry with temporary cloudy skies, alongside day and night temperatures expected to remain stable. A mild heatwave continues in the Rajshahi and Sirajganj districts.

On Friday, a similar weather pattern is expected, with thunderstorms likely to affect the same divisions after 9 AM, persisting through the next 24 hours. The anticipated rainfall might be accompanied by hail in some locations, which could contribute to a sudden drop in temperature—projected to slightly decrease by 1-2 degrees Celsius across the country, while night temperatures could remain relatively unchanged.

According to the meteorological office, the highest temperature recorded recently was in Baghabari at 36.3 degrees Celsius, and the lowest was noted in Tentulia at 13.7 degrees Celsius. The report adds that there is no expectation of severe weather conditions at sea, with the North Bay of Bengal and coastal areas remaining calm.

With temperatures remaining stable during both day and night, the trend provides some relief amid the ongoing mild heatwave affecting certain districts. The sun rose today at 6:04 AM and is expected to set at 6:16 PM.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department urges citizens to stay prepared for sudden weather changes, especially as thunderstorms approach. The public can find regular updates by checking their official website or contacting their offices for immediate concerns.

The office also confirmed there are currently no alerts or signals for internal river ports, ensuring safe transit for river traffic.
