Severe Thunderstorms And Heavy Rain Expected Across Kanagawa

The Japan Meteorological Agency warns of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms for January 6th and 7th, urging locals to take precautions.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecasted for Kanagawa Prefecture, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The severe weather is expected to persist from the night of January 6th and continue through the early hours of January 7th, with alarms indicating the possibility of warning-level precipitation.

These forecasts arise from the current development of low-pressure systems accompanied by fronts over southern Kanto, which is set to move toward the northeastern sea areas near Hokkaido by the morning of January 7th. The unstable atmospheric conditions will be boosted by warm and humid air flowing toward this low-pressure system.

Rain may start as early as the evening of January 6th, particularly intensifying over southern Kanto and the Izu Islands. The JMA predicts rainfall rates of up to 40mm per hour at times. For the period from 6PM on January 6th to 6PM on January 7th, the total precipitation forecast is around 60mm for both southern Kanto and the Izu Islands.

Residents are advised to remain cautious of potential hazards such as landslides, inundated low-lying areas, and increased river flow due to the anticipated rain. The agency has also alerted the public to be mindful of lightning and continual strong winds, particularly as cumulonimbus clouds are expected to develop.

For the local area, updates include specific weather conditions across various prefectures:

  • Ibaraki Prefecture (North): Expected thunderstorms tonight along with rain.

  • Tochigi Prefecture (South): Rain with fog forecasted for the south-western sections.

  • Saitama Prefecture (South): Rain expected throughout the night.

  • Tokyo: Heavy rain, especially with thunder during the earlier part of the night.

By the morning of January 7th, weather conditions will improve with forecasts predicting sunnier skies for many areas across Kanto, with temperatures increasing, making it feel much milder than the preceding days.

With the winter season still affecting weather conditions, citizens are reminded to take precautionary measures as necessary and stay updated on changes through reliable sources such as the JMA. Their advisories are pivotal during this dynamic weather period, especially for those returning to regular activities after the holiday season.
