Severe Storms Sweep Across Poland As Alerts Issued

Thunderstorms bring heavy rain and strong winds, prompting safety warnings from meteorologists.

As storm fronts sweep across Poland, residents are urged to stay vigilant and informed about the severe weather conditions taking shape. On April 18, 2025, a series of thunderstorms are currently moving through the country, bringing with them the potential for heavy rainfall, strong winds, and even hail.

According to the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW), which continuously monitors the weather situation in Poland, the storms have intensified in various regions. In a report released before 6:00 PM, meteorologist Damian Zdonek from tvnmeteo.pl indicated that both moderate and severe storms are developing, particularly affecting the Lublin Province. Areas including Biłgoraj, Janów Lubelski, Kraśnik, Urzędów, and Opole Lubelskie are currently experiencing thunder and lightning.

These storms are moving in a north-westerly direction and are expected to reach Kraśnik, Poniatowa, and Annopol in the coming hours. The weather is characterized by rainfall amounts reaching up to 20 liters per square meter, with localized areas potentially seeing as much as 30 liters. Winds are also a significant concern, blowing at speeds of 50 to 70 kilometers per hour, with gusts that could reach 80 to 90 kilometers per hour in some places.

Moreover, hailstones measuring between 2 to 4 centimeters in diameter are also a possibility, posing risks to both property and personal safety. The IMGW has issued alerts to inform the public of these dangerous conditions, and the Government Security Centre (RCB) is sending additional warnings as necessary.

In light of these severe weather warnings, the IMGW has provided essential safety guidelines for those caught in storms. Residents are advised to remain indoors and avoid open spaces, trees, and metal objects. If caught outside, seeking shelter in a sturdy building or vehicle is crucial, as cars can serve as effective protection against lightning strikes due to their metal frames acting as Faraday cages.

It is important to disconnect electrical devices to prevent damage from power surges and to avoid using electrical appliances during storms. Staying updated with alerts from the IMGW and RCB is also recommended to ensure safety during these unpredictable weather events.

The storms currently impacting Poland are part of a broader pattern of extreme weather that has been observed globally, with climate change contributing to more frequent and severe weather phenomena. As storms become more intense, the importance of preparedness and awareness cannot be overstated.

As the evening approaches, residents in affected areas are reminded to stay alert and follow safety protocols to minimize risks associated with severe weather. With the storm front continuing to move, it is advisable to keep track of updates and heed any warnings issued by meteorological authorities.

In summary, the storms passing over Poland on April 18, 2025, present significant weather challenges, including heavy rain, strong winds, and potential hail. With the IMGW actively monitoring the situation and issuing alerts, it is vital for individuals to prioritize safety and remain informed.
