Severe Storm Alerts Issued For 147 Cities In Paraná

Orange and yellow alerts warn of heavy rain and strong winds across the state.

On Wednesday, April 2, 2025, the Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (Inmet) issued an orange alert for storms affecting 147 municipalities in Paraná. This warning, classified as a danger alert, is valid from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM on the same day, and it forecasts significant rainfall and hazardous weather conditions.

The orange alert predicts rainfall rates between 30 and 60 mm/h or total precipitation of 50 to 100 mm throughout the day. Additionally, residents can expect intense winds ranging from 60 km/h to 100 km/h, as well as the possibility of hail. Inmet has also warned of risks such as power outages, damage to crops, falling trees, and flooding due to these severe weather conditions.

In conjunction with the orange alert, Inmet has issued a yellow alert for intense rain, which applies to all 399 cities in Paraná until 10:00 AM on Thursday, April 3, 2025. This broader warning indicates that while the weather remains unstable, the situation could worsen throughout the region.

According to the Sistema de Tecnologia e Monitoramento Ambiental do Paraná (Simepar), the instability in the weather is influenced by a low-pressure system forming in Rio Grande do Sul. This system is expected to enhance the likelihood of showers and storms across all regions of Paraná. Despite the potential for severe weather, temperatures are expected to remain high, with maximums nearing 30°C, particularly in the northern areas and along the coast.

As the weather pattern continues, Thursday, April 3, will see ongoing instability due to the advancement of a cold front from the ocean. By the afternoon, areas of instability are anticipated to strengthen, leading to localized storms. Significant rainfall is expected in the eastern part of the state, particularly between the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba and the coast.

Inmet has provided specific safety recommendations for residents in affected areas. During periods of strong winds, it is advised to avoid sheltering under trees due to the risk of falling branches and electrical discharges. Additionally, people should refrain from parking vehicles near transmission towers and advertising signs, which may be toppled by the wind. To mitigate potential electrical damage, residents are encouraged to unplug electrical devices and, if feasible, turn off the main power supply.

Inmet's alerts are part of a broader pattern of severe weather impacting various regions in Brazil. The orange alert for storms in Paraná is echoed by similar warnings in other states, where rainfall is expected to exceed 100 mm, accompanied by wind gusts reaching up to 100 km/h. These conditions are attributed to the movement of a cold front across the country, which is expected to generate isolated storms in the Southeast.

As the cold front approaches, the state of São Paulo is also under alert for severe weather, particularly along its coast. The rains and storms are predicted to extend into the center-south of Rio de Janeiro by the night of Thursday, April 3, and into the early hours of Friday, April 4.

Inmet has classified this weather event as exceptional, particularly for areas close to the coast in both São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, where substantial rainfall and strong winds are expected. The agency has issued multiple alerts to ensure that residents are prepared for the impending storms.

In summary, the weather forecast for Paraná and surrounding areas indicates a significant risk of severe storms, with high winds and heavy rainfall expected over the next few days. Residents are urged to stay informed and take appropriate precautions to ensure their safety during this weather event.

For those living in the affected municipalities, it is crucial to remain vigilant as the weather conditions evolve. Keeping updated with Inmet’s alerts and following safety guidelines can help mitigate risks associated with this dangerous weather.
