Heavy snowfall has led to numerous transportation challenges across Nagasaki Prefecture, prompting the suspension of bus services beginning from the first service on February 8, 2025. Commuters have faced significant disruptions as authorities have called for caution due to the dangerously slippery conditions.
Nagasaki Bus, Saikai Bus, and the Prefectural Bus have all ceased operations on their routes, reported at 6:45 AM. The decision came as authorities scrambled to manage the effects of the severe weather and its impact on public safety.
According to local broadcasts, "There have been numerous reports of slip accidents due to the snow," highlighting the dangerous situation for anyone on the roads. The weather conditions have also prompted worries about delays and safety for those relying on public transit.
Specifically, all lines of Nagasaki Bus and Saikai Bus have halted services, along with the Prefectural Bus covering all routes within Nagasaki City. Commuters are left uncertain about when services might resume as local agencies assess the infrastructure and weather conditions.
Despite the interruptions on bus lines, the Nagasaki Airport bus line, known as the Airport Liner which uses the Dejima Road, has operated normally. This has been a relief for travelers who depend on air travel, allowing them continued access to the airport.
Transportation via the Nagasaki Electric Tramway, along with JR Kyushu, Shimabara Railway, and Matsura Railway, remains unaffected, providing some options for residents and commuters. Meanwhile, Seihi Bus and Sasebo Bus have also suspended service on specific lines, planning to survey mountain routes for safety before resuming operations.
The heavy snow is not only impacting public transportation but has raised alarms about potential travel delays, accidents, and the broader impacts on the community as the winter storm continues. Local officials are advising residents to stay indoors and limit travel where possible during peak snowfall times.
With the current forecasts indicating more snow may be on the way, authorities are monitoring conditions and will continue to provide updates on service status. For now, commuters are urged to remain patient and stay tuned for changes to the public transit schedule.
