Severe Snow And Flooding Disrupt Merseyside Transport

Merseyside faces multiple road closures and cancellations amid severe weather alerts for snow and ice.

Severe weather conditions have wreaked havoc across Wirral and Merseyside this week, as heavy snowfall and flooding caused widespread delays, road closures, and transport disruptions. The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice, valid from midnight on January 6 until noon on January 7, following significant snowfall on January 5.

Local motorists faced serious challenges on the roads as various incidents were reported across major routes. The M56 westbound faced closures after multiple accidents, including one at Junction 11. Reports from traffic management systems noted severe delays and partially blocked lanes due to crashes. Meanwhile, the M53 southbound was also affected, with emergency repairs causing long queues.

On the A533 Southern Expressway, four lorries became stranded, prompting full closure of the road both ways as traffic attempted to navigate the treacherous conditions. Other areas, such as Queens Drive, experienced significant congestion, with flooding disrupting traffic movement.

Schools across Wirral were forced to close due to the adverse conditions. The Mosslands School and St John Plessington were among the institutions affected, as the adverse weather rendered travel unsafe for students and staff.

Further complications arose from the flooding triggered by melting snow. A total of 15 roads were identified by Wirral Council as needing closure to maintain safety. Roads including Brimstage Lane and Woodchurch Road were impacted, with motorists advised to heed road closures and signs.

Services on the Merseyrail Northern Line also encountered difficulties, with delays reported between Hunts Cross and Ormskirk. Flooding was noted as the cause, particularly affecting services southwards toward Chester. Merserail highlighted the infrastructural challenges they faced due to the weather extremes, stating: "There are currently delays and disruption at Maghull on Merseyrail Northern Line services operating between Hunts Cross and Ormskirk," as communicated via their X account.

Authorities including Wirral Council took immediate steps to address the burgeoning issues, with gritting crews deployed throughout the night prior to the weather warnings. Various road inspections were conducted to assess the viability of rerouting emergency vehicles and repairing affected roads.

The latest updates from the Environment Agency indicate increased flood risks, particularly along the River Weaver and Sankey Brook, where flood alerts remain active. Officials warned residents near these areas to be vigilant after measurements indicated levels approaching those known to correlate with property flooding.

Merseyside commuters are advised to monitor local updates, including those from Liverpool ECHO, which reported on the number of roads closed, including the A540 Chester High Road and many others. Continuous news alerts have been provided, detailing road closures and advising on alternative travel routes.

Despite the challenges presented by the weather, authorities urged patience from the public, emphasizing the importance of adhering to safety warnings. Wirral Council reiterated their commitment to maintaining public safety: "Wirral Council highways teams are continuing to inspect and monitor the situation on the roads." The concerted effort aims to mitigate risks and provide timely updates to the community.

The weekend's dismal conditions have not only disrupted transport services but also shortened economic activity as businesses confront unfriendly weather impacts. With schools closed, inclement weather causing travel bans, and emergency repairs blocking key routes, many residents are feeling the strain of the persisting winter conditions.

Looking forward, the Met Office has indicated potential for continued bad weather, with warnings of more snow and ice expected to impact the region. Local schools remain on alert for potential closures as forecasts predict additional snowfall. Local residents are urged to remain prepared and to stay tuned for any communication from local officials as they navigate the turbulent weather conditions.
