Severe Heatwave Hits India As Temperatures Soar

Multiple states face intense heat alerts with rising temperatures and health warnings issued.

As the month of April progresses, the heat across India is intensifying, with multiple states facing severe heatwave conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow alerts for several regions, warning residents about the rising temperatures and advising precautions.

In Mumbai, the IMD has predicted a significant increase in temperatures, with a yellow alert in effect for the next three days starting April 7, 2025. The department forecasts a 3-4 degree Celsius rise in maximum temperatures across Maharashtra until April 11. On Sunday, April 6, the maximum temperature was recorded at 33.8 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was 24 degrees Celsius. On Monday, clear skies are expected in Mumbai, with temperatures ranging from 24 degrees Celsius in the morning to a high of 36 degrees Celsius during the day. The Santacruz observatory recorded a maximum of 33.8 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 24.3 degrees Celsius, while the Colaba observatory noted a maximum of 33.7 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 25.5 degrees Celsius.

In addition to Mumbai, the IMD also issued heatwave alerts for Delhi and Madhya Pradesh. Delhi is bracing for extreme heat, with temperatures predicted to soar between 40 and 42 degrees Celsius. A yellow alert for heatwave conditions has been issued until April 9, 2025. On April 7, the minimum temperature in the capital was recorded at 20.2 degrees Celsius, with the day’s maximum expected to reach 41 degrees Celsius. Winds are expected to blow at a speed of 10-12 kilometers per hour, but the nights remain relatively cool, described as a ‘no warm night condition’ by meteorologists.

In Uttar Pradesh, the situation is similarly dire. The state is experiencing a surge in temperatures, particularly in urban areas compared to rural ones. The weather department has indicated that cities like Ghaziabad, Hapur, Gautam Buddha Nagar, and Aligarh may experience heatwave conditions. On April 7, temperatures in Banda, Chitrakoot, and surrounding areas are expected to range between 40 and 50 degrees Celsius. Meteorologists predict a gradual increase of 2-3 degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures over the next few days, followed by a potential drop of 2-4 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, Bikaner in Rajasthan is expected to face intense heat, with temperatures likely to exceed 44 degrees Celsius. The weather department has issued warnings about rising temperatures, advising people to remain in safe places. On April 6, Bikaner recorded a maximum temperature of 43.3 degrees Celsius. By Monday morning, temperatures had already surpassed 30 degrees Celsius, with expectations of reaching 44 degrees Celsius in the afternoon. The weather department anticipates that conditions will worsen over the next three days, urging residents to take precautions against the heat.

As the heatwave spreads, the IMD has also noted that the months of April, May, and June are expected to be particularly hot this year. The West Bengal government has responded to the rising temperatures by announcing that summer vacations will commence earlier this year, starting from April 30, instead of the usual May 9. This decision reflects the growing concern over heat-related health risks, as doctors recommend that individuals drink 4-5 liters of water daily to prevent dehydration.

In Madhya Pradesh, cities like Neemuch, Mandsaur, and Ratlam are under heatwave alerts, with maximum temperatures expected to surpass 40 degrees Celsius. The IMD forecasts that the heatwave will affect other districts from April 8 to 10. Furthermore, parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may experience light rain between April 9 and 11, providing some respite from the heat. However, the IMD has warned that some regions in Himachal Pradesh may also face heatwave conditions on April 7.

In summary, the heatwave gripping India is causing significant discomfort and health concerns among residents. With temperatures soaring across multiple states, authorities are urging people to stay indoors during peak hours and to take necessary precautions to stay hydrated. The upcoming days are crucial as meteorologists monitor the situation closely, hoping for a shift in weather patterns that could alleviate the intense heat.
