Heavy downpours have wreaked havoc across KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), resulting in significant flooding and prompting urgent warnings from local authorities. As the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued alerts for severe thunderstorms and disruptive rains, residents and motorists alike are being advised to exercise extreme caution.
On Friday, April 25, 2025, various parts of KZN experienced localised flooding, particularly in Durban and its surrounding areas. Reports of large water puddles and obstructed roads have been widespread, with the M19 Umgeni Road under the N2 bridge identified as a major hotspot. ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson stated, "This includes large water puddles that have formed all over Durban. The hotspots being the M19 Umgeni Road under the N2 bridge, North Coast Road near Mimosa Road. We’ve had reports of the M4 by Riverside severely waterlogged and other common spots."
The flooding has led to significant traffic delays, with authorities urging motorists to be cautious in the treacherous conditions. Jamieson emphasized the importance of vehicle maintenance and visibility during such weather, advising drivers to ensure their headlights are on and to leave earlier than usual to account for potential delays. "Please ensure your vehicle is in good condition, that you drive with your headlights on to make yourself visible and you leave a little earlier to accommodate the weather," he said.
In addition to the flooding, the SAWS has forecast very cold weather and possible snow in the central and western parts of KZN, further complicating the situation. The agency has issued a yellow level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms, which could lead to more heavy downpours and localised flooding in several regions, including the Free State, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, and North West.
Residents have been cautioned to monitor low-lying areas and to evacuate if necessary. Jamieson added, "With regards to flooding at homes, we urge people to please monitor low-lying houses and be careful. Should any water enter your house and you suspect flooding to occur, leave the house before it’s too late." He also warned about the dangers posed by collapsing sandbanks, advising residents to be aware of their surroundings.
As the situation develops, KZN residents can expect continued cloudy and cool to cold weather, with widespread showers and thundershowers anticipated. The SAWS has indicated that light snow is possible in the southwestern high grounds of KZN, adding another layer of concern for those in the affected areas.
In light of these warnings, motorists are reminded to stay vigilant and prioritize safety. Jamieson urged, "We urge motorists to leave a bit earlier, please only proceed if you have to go to your destination. Ensure that your windscreen wipers are in good condition and your tyres please with your headlights on so you can see other road users. Keep safe following distance so you stop when you need to."
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and are prepared to respond as needed. The community is encouraged to stay informed through local news outlets and the SAWS for the latest updates on weather conditions and safety advisories.
In summary, the recent heavy rains in KwaZulu-Natal have led to significant flooding and disruption, with authorities urging residents to take precautions. As the weather conditions continue to evolve, staying safe and informed is of utmost importance.
