Severe Disruptions Hit Avanti West Coast Train Services This Weekend

Ongoing strikes and engineering works lead to limited schedules and major service interruptions for passengers.

Avanti West Coast passengers are bracing for severe disruptions over the weekend starting February 2, 2025, as strikes by train managers coincide with planned engineering works. The situation has forced the train operating company to implement reduced service schedules, potentially hindering travel plans for numerous commuters.

The Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) has resumed its industrial action this weekend after previous strikes were called off for two weeks to facilitate negotiations. Despite the temporary pause, discussions did not yield satisfactory progress on the long-standing rest day working dispute, prompting the union to continue its strike through to May.

"Passengers should check updates before departure," advised Kathryn O’Brien, Avanti West Coast’s customer experience director. This weekend, the flagship intercity operator will run only one train per hour between London Euston and Birmingham, Manchester, and Preston. Given the reduced schedule, key destinations such as Edinburgh, North Wales, and Blackpool will have no direct services.

Engineering works near Crewe are compounding the disruptions, leading to service diversions and the unavailability of direct trains between London and Liverpool. For those needing to travel, only shuttle services will operate between Liverpool and Crewe, stretching travel times significantly. The first train from Euston will leave just before 9 am, with the final departure planned for around 5 pm, leaving many travelers stuck without viable options.

The impact of the strikes extends beyond specific routes. O’Brien expressed disappointment over the long-lasting effect of the industrial action on patrons who plan family visits, business trips, or leisure outings. "We regret the continued industrial action, which affects families and commuters alike," she added.

For travelers already holding tickets for Sunday, Avanti West Coast has implemented flexible measures. Passengers can either opt to travel on alternate dates between Saturday and Tuesday or request full refunds if they choose not to travel. The disruption timetable is expected to be maintained for as long as the strike drags on, leaving commuters and their travel plans uncertain.

RMT officials remain available for negotiations, highlighting their readiness to engage at any time to resolve the issues surrounding rest day working. A spokesperson for the union stated, "We are always available for negotiations to resolve this dispute. Until meaningful progress is made, strike action will proceed as scheduled." The union's commitment to discussions offers some hope for passengers affected by the current situation.

Not to be forgotten, those using the East Coast Main Line this weekend will also face challenges. Engineering upgrades at London King’s Cross are slated to suspend services entirely, creating additional congestion and inconveniences for rail travelers. The maintenance includes track upgrades, drainage improvements, and overhead power line maintenance, complicate things even more for weekend commuters.

Passengers using both Avanti West Coast and the East Coast Main Line are encouraged to remain vigilant, verifying their travel plans regularly. The whole scenario is uncertain as the RMT's renewed strike actions could persist, disrupting the travel plans of thousands across the UK's busiest rail lines. A quick check before traveling can help manage expectations and minimize delays.

Significant delays, cancellations, and route alterations are anticipated this weekend. Therefore, travelers must stay informed about any changes to their travel schedules. With the strike continuing and engineering works likely to have repercussions beyond the immediate weekend, it’s prudent for passengers to plan accordingly.
