Severe Congestion Expected On Shuto Expressway This New Year

Travelers urged to prepare for heavy traffic and winter weather during the holiday season.

With the arrival of the New Year's holiday season, travelers across Japan are gearing up for one of the busiest times of the year on the nation's roads. The Shuto Expressway and other major highways are expected to experience severe congestion, particularly during the peak travel days of December 28 and January 3.

This surge in traffic is commonplace during the New Year's period, which ranks alongside the Golden Week and Obon holidays as one of the top travel times for returning home or going on vacation. During this peak time, areas typically free of congestion can become unexpectedly crowded, with longer waits anticipated on the approache to popular destinations.

According to estimates by the National Expressway Company of Japan, significant delays are expected across various expressways, including the Tokai Expressway and the Chuo Expressway. The heaviest congestion is forecasted at the Kanagawa Prefecture's Ayase Smart Interchange, where delays could extend to 25 kilometers on the morning of December 28.

"During the New Year's travel period, we advise drivers to avoid peak times to reduce stress on the roads," stated officials from NEXCO. Commuters are encouraged to identify and avoid these high-traffic days to experience smoother travels.

Traveler safety is another pressing concern during this period. Weather conditions, including potential snow and icy roads, are influencing recommendations for winter-driving preparedness. Authorities urge drivers to equip their vehicles with appropriate snow gear and remain cautious on the roads.

Rounding out the experience are service areas (S.A.) along the highways. With increased traffic not only slowing down travel but also overwhelming these rest stops, it's wise for drivers to plan their stops strategically. "Service areas will be extremely crowded, so plan accordingly," reported TBS News, highlighting the importance of pre-emptive planning.

Consequently, those planning excursions during this season should secure accommodation and rest stops well-ahead of time to alleviate potential frustrations.

Travelers should also keep the following safety measures and tips in mind:

1. Ensure your vehicle is winter-ready. This includes checking the car battery, spectacle blades, and tires.

2. Consider bringing extra supplies such as food, water, blankets, and medications in case delays extend longer than expected.

3. Stay updated on real-time traffic and weather reports to make informed decisions about your routes.

This year's New Year's traffic rush is expected to be particularly intense due to the weather's unpredictability and the heavy flow of travelers. It is more important than ever for drivers to adequately prepare for their journeys, accounting for the congestion and possible delays on the Shuto Expressway.

By approaching travel with mindful awareness and preparation, families and individuals can navigate the holiday surge with greater ease, making their experience less stressful and more enjoyable.

travelers should remain patient and flexible as they navigate not only the roads but also conditions and unforeseen challenges as they hit the highway.

”“Driving safe and smart this New Year’s will be key to ensuring the holiday trips won’t be just enjoyable but also safe for everyone involved, wrapping up the year on a note of solidarity and care.
