Severe Cold Wave Hits South Korea With Heavy Snowfall

Nation braces for frigid temperatures and significant snowfall this weekend as cold fronts set in

South Korea is grappling with severe cold and snowfall as winter storms impact the region. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), citizens are advised to prepare for harsh conditions over the weekend of December 22, 2023. The expected weather is largely influenced by cold continental high-pressure systems moving south from northern China, bringing low temperatures and snow.

On December 22, temperatures across the nation are predicted to plummet significantly. The morning will see lows between -12 and 1 degrees Celsius, with daytime highs reaching only between 0 and 8 degrees Celsius. This chilling forecast has led to the issuance of cold wave warnings, particularly for regions such as Chuncheon, which is expected to dip to -12 degrees Celsius.

"The morning temperatures will drop significantly from the previous day's range, particularly affecting the central inland regions, which could see lows around -10 degrees Celsius," reported KMA. Major cities like Seoul are also expected to feel the impact, with minimum temperatures forecasted at -6 degrees Celsius. The city will mostly experience clear skies but will be accompanied by biting winds, making it feel even colder.

Throughout South Korea, the weather will present clearer skies but will remain overcast along the Chungcheong and Jeolla coasts where clouds are more prevalent. Jeju Island, too, will experience persistent cloudy conditions with occasional rain or snow, especially during the day on the 22nd.

The KMA predicts varying levels of snowfall over the weekend. For December 20-21, snowfall accumulation is expected to be around 3 to 8 centimeters across the southern and northeastern regions of Gyeonggi, and 1 to 5 centimeters for Seoul and surrounding areas. According to forecasts, Gyeonggi Province's inland areas, particularly the mountainous regions, can anticipate heavier snowfalls accumulating to 3 to 10 centimeters.

"The expected minimum temperatures are forecasted to be -6 degrees Celsius for Seoul and even lower for other regions like Chuncheon at -12 degrees Celsius," said a KMA official. This dramatic drop compared to previous days suggests many areas could experience their coldest morning of the season.

The impact on daily life will be significant, as residents are encouraged to layer clothing and prepare for potentially dangerous outdoor conditions. Weather-related advisories may also prompt caution for motorists amid icy roads and reduced visibility due to snowfall.

Despite the harsh weather, this period has led to improved air quality, as the KMA forecasts good levels of particulates due to fresh air circulation eliminating pollutants. The organization reassured citizens, saying, "The overall air quality has been good across all regions thanks to the strong wind dispersing harmful particles and uncertainties."

The nation will remain on high alert, and as this winter storm progresses, citizens are urged to stay informed via updates from reliable weather sources, adhering to safety protocols as they navigate through this severe cold spell.

Looking forward, the KMA expects conditions to stabilize shortly after, with temperatures slowly rising as the influence of the cold high-pressure system wanes. Residents are hopeful for milder weather as the festive season approaches, wanting to celebrate without the burden of severe cold and snow.

Understanding weather patterns and potential impacts is critically important, especially as climate change continues to alter traditional weather norms. South Korea, like many parts of the world, experiences such extremes more frequently, reminding citizens to remain aware and prepared for the unpredictability of seasonal weather.
