Chihuahua, Mexico experienced bone-chilling temperatures on January 21, as reported by the Coordinación Estatal de Protección Civil (CEPC). A total of 37 municipalities throughout the state reported freezing conditions, startling residents and compelling officials to issue warnings and preventive recommendations.
The lowest temperature recorded was a severe -10.2°C in Gómez Farías, closely followed by Guachochi at -10°C and El Vergel, part of Balleza, at -10.1°C. Other municipalities also faced drastic drops, creating widespread discomfort and raising concerns for public health among the at-risk populations who often lack adequate heating.
From Ahumada’s -8.8°C, Janos at -8.6°C, and more, these extreme conditions highlight the grim reality facing many regions within Chihuahua. Notably, Ciudad Juárez recorded temperatures reaching -6.9°C, making clear the cold’s extensive reach.
The CEPC issued alerts indicating no significant recovery of temperatures was expected. Maximums for the day were projected to barely top 6°C, with many areas, especially along the border, likely facing highs around just 3°C. These forecasts are dire, considering many locals rely on traditional heating methods, which may not be sufficient against such harsh cold.
To make matters worse, moderate winds were also anticipated, blowing at speeds ranging from 20 to 41 km/h, exacerbated by already low temperatures to create even harsher wind chill factors. Residents from rural areas, where proper insulation may be absent, are particularly vulnerable to these weather anomalies.
Looking forward to the days following January 21, the authorities warned residents to brace for continued cold weather, with forecasts predicting frigid mornings and lows dipping again to as low as -10°C, especially affecting the Sierra Tarahumara region, where elevations contribute to even colder weather patterns. Rafael Loera from the Secretaría de Desarrollo Humano y Bien Común expressed, "Por instrucciones de la gobernadora Maru Campos, hemos permanecido atentos del comportamiento climático en estrecha colaboración con Protección Civil del Estado. Apart from these immediate measures, the state administration has been mobilizing resources, providing emergency support to families hit hard by the cold, with over 54,600 assistance packages distributed. The response also includes reopening all previously affected highways, restoring connectivity for those needing to travel for work or seek assistance, reinforcing the importance of safety on the roads during extreme weather, wherein road conditions can deteriorate rapidly.
