Severe Cold Snap Hits Oita Prefecture With Snowfall

Unusual March weather disrupts traffic and brings back winter conditions as temperatures drop significantly.

On March 19, 2025, Oita Prefecture experienced a winter chill reminiscent of February, bringing snow to several areas and resulting in traffic disruptions.

By early morning, Hita City had recorded an official measurement of two centimeters of snow as of 5 AM.

The cold wave was attributed to a strong winter pressure pattern that led to significant snowfall, especially in the western parts of the prefecture. The minimum temperature was reported at -0.6 degrees Celsius in Yufuin-cho, Yufu City, marking a return to conditions typical for late winter.

Due to the snow, several sections of major highways faced closures. The East Kyushu Expressway was shut down in both directions between Oita Interchange and Nakatsu Interchange, along with the Oita Expressway, which saw restrictions from Hiji Junction to Hita Interchange.

As traffic ground to a halt, NEXCO West Japan reported that snow and ice removal operations were underway. However, the agency cautioned that additional snow was forecasted, providing little hope for an immediate lifting of the traffic restrictions in place.

Motorists and locals alike were advised to remain cautious due to the winter weather conditions, which are expected to persist throughout the day.

The challenges of navigating through inclement weather highlight the ongoing impact of winter even as spring approaches. Residents have begun sharing their experiences and images of the snowfall on social media, capturing the beauty and struggle of adapting to quick weather changes.
