Vietnam's National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has issued timely alerts as cold air and inclement weather conditions move across Central and Northern Vietnam. The recent shift, noted on December 27, 2023, brings with it frigid temperatures and heavy rainfall, which pose significant risks to both residents and infrastructure.
The cold front is currently making its way through several northeastern areas and is expected to intensify. Reports from the forecasting center indicate temperatures will drop to between 12 and 15 degrees Celsius across Northern and North Central Vietnam, with mountainous regions experiencing even lower temperatures, dropping below 10 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, temperatures across the Huế to Phú Yên region are predicted to hover between 15 and 18 degrees Celsius.
"The cold air is affecting several areas of the northeastern north-central region, and as we look toward the next few days, it will continue to create unhappy weather patterns throughout the area," stated the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting. They have noted the influence of the intensified cold front will not just bring low temperatures, but also heavy rains throughout the region.
Indeed, the current rainfall makes for concerning forecasts, particularly from the morning of December 27 through the night. Rainfall amounts are projected to range from 30 to 70 mm, with certain locations experiencing torrential downpours exceeding 120 mm. The quick accumulation of rain raises serious concerns for flooding and landslides, particularly in vulnerable areas.
Overnight and through early morning, the Quảng Bình to Khánh Hòa region has already reported significant rainfall, including over 30 mm at several monitoring stations like Tam Trà (38.8 mm), Bình Trị (34 mm), and Lưu Vực Hồ Cam Ranh (30.6 mm). The trends suggest these numbers could swell even higher due to continued precipitation.
The authorities have cautioned about the dangers of heavy rains, particularly the potential for flash floods on small rivers and streams, along with landslides on steep terrain. They've assessed the risk for such incidents at level one, but many experts advise remaining vigilant.
"From 27/12, heavy rain is expected to decrease gradually over the coming days, but we still need to be cautious, especially during thunderstorms when the risk of lightning and strong winds increases," the forecasting center advised.
Looking at coastal conditions, the seas are also being affected by the intensified cold air. Observations have shown increasing northeast winds reaching levels of 6-7, with gusts up to level 9. The wave heights across the areas have also dramatically increased, with estimates predicting rough seas with waves between 2.0 and 6.0 meters.
Authorities are urging fishermen and maritime operators to exercise caution as moderate to strong winds and heavy seas pose significant hazards. From Quảng Trị to Cà Mau, and across the mid-south Vietnam Sea, the weather promises to be tumultuous with strong gales expected to last throughout the period of high alert.

With the foundation of the wet season behind us, conditions are ripe for additional disruptions, particularly to transport and agriculture sectors which are vulnerable to both flooding and mucked-up roads.
