Serious Request Raises Record €11.5 Million For Metakids

The community-driven campaign shows remarkable solidarity for research on childhood metabolic diseases.

Serious Request, the annual fundraising campaign organized by NPO 3FM, has achieved remarkable success this year, raising over €11.5 million for Metakids. The impressive total of €11,513,485 marks the highest amount raised by the campaign in the past decade, highlighting the community's dedication and generosity.

This year's initiative, which took place from December 18 to December 24, 2024, involved DJs Barend van Deelen, Sophie Hijlkema, and Wijnand Speelman broadcasting live from the Glazen Huis in Zwolle. Their efforts were complemented by various fundraising activities, including auctioning items and direct donations from the public and notable figures.

Among the significant contributions was a signed Liverpool football shirt, donated by Liverpool manager Arne Slot, which fetched €35,000 at auction. Slot expressed his enthusiasm for the cause, stating, "It's fantastic to contribute to such an important cause" during his live call on the radio to support the initiative. This level of involvement from public figures added to the campaign's visibility and engagement.

Alongside Slot, journalists Mike Verweij and Valentijn Driessen from De Telegraaf played their part by holding their own fundraisers. Verweij’s initiative, which offered bidders the chance to gain exclusive access to football experiences, raised €1,550, demonstrating how individuals can have a substantial impact on collective efforts.

The campaign also inspired smaller local initiatives, such as one led by Kai Houtkooper and his classmates at the Van der Muelen-Vastwijkschool, which exceeded their goal of €1,500 by raising €2,170 for Metakids. Local contributions like these exemplify the grassroots level of support fueling this national event.

Metakids aims to use these funds to facilitate breakthroughs in research for metabolic diseases, which are among the most lethal childhood ailments. This is especially significant as over 10,000 families across the Netherlands are confronted with these challenging health conditions. With potential advancements like gene therapy and new medications, there is hope to treat nearly half of all metabolic patients as research progresses.

The campaign concluded with heartfelt acknowledgments from all involved. NPO 3FM noted, “Thanks to your efforts, Metakids can receive this fantastic sum for research on metabolic diseases.” These words reflect the collective commitment to addressing pediatric health issues and the promising future of related medical advancements.

With serious community engagement and both personal and expansive contributions to the existing sum, Serious Request 2024 not only sets new fundraising records but also ignites inspiration for future charitable endeavors. The dedication shown this year may herald similar successes for years to come, giving hope to families affected by metabolic diseases and reaffirming the compelling power of community spirit.
