In the early hours of April 29, 2025, a serious accident unfolded on the S2 expressway in Dawidy, near Warsaw, leaving 17 people injured, including two in critical condition. The incident occurred just before 3:00 AM when a long-distance bus, carrying 26 passengers and the driver, veered off course while attempting to transition onto the S79 road. The bus struck energy-absorbing barriers and subsequently overturned, creating a chaotic scene that required immediate emergency response.
As rescue teams rushed to the scene, a truck collided with a fire truck from the local volunteer fire department, OSP Dawidy, which was already on-site assisting the bus passengers. This secondary collision trapped the truck driver inside the cabin, necessitating the use of hydraulic extraction tools by firefighters to free him. The situation escalated quickly as paramedics worked to assess and transport the injured.
According to Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesperson for the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration, 16 individuals were taken to hospitals, including a child and their guardian. Among the injured were 12 bus passengers, the truck driver, the fire truck driver, and a firefighter from the rescue unit. The condition of two individuals is considered serious, with injuries reported to include head trauma and injuries to the chest, arms, and legs.
Witnesses reported that the bus passengers were primarily citizens from Ukraine and Belarus, with some from Spain and Poland. The bus was operated by a transportation company that provides routes between Minsk and Warsaw. In total, 78 paramedics and 23 units from the fire department were involved in the rescue operation, showcasing a significant emergency response effort.
As rescue operations continued, the S2 route from the Puławska junction to Chopin Airport was completely blocked, causing significant traffic delays in both directions. Emergency services set up a medical tent along the route to provide immediate care for the injured while they awaited transport to hospitals.
Piotr Owczarski, spokesperson for the Provincial Emergency Medical Service "Meditrans" in Warsaw, emphasized the exemplary cooperation among emergency services. He stated, "Thanks to their professionalism, all injured were transported to hospitals within minutes and received proper care, preventing any fatalities." The quick actions of the first responders were crucial in managing the aftermath of the accidents.
Despite the rapid response, the accidents raised questions about the conditions on the road at the time. Brigadier Karol Kroć, spokesperson for the Mazovian Provincial Commander of the State Fire Service, noted that the causes of the accidents remain unclear and that an investigation would be conducted by the police. He reassured the public that no further threats to the injured existed, but advised patience as the situation unfolded.
As of 8:00 AM, efforts to clear the road were underway, but officials warned that traffic would remain heavily impacted for several hours. The police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding both accidents, aiming to provide a clearer picture of what led to this unfortunate series of events.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers present on roadways, particularly during early morning hours when visibility and driver alertness may be compromised. The community of Dawidy, along with the emergency services, is now focused on supporting those affected and ensuring such incidents are minimized in the future.
