Seogwipo Schools Launch Family Engagement Programs

New initiatives aim to enhance cultural experiences and career exploration for students and families.

Seogwipo City Education Support Agency, under the leadership of Education Director Kang Ok-hwa, has launched an engaging initiative titled 'Our Family Play Together with the Regional Children's Center'. This program, which began on April 12, 2025, and will run until July 2025, aims to provide unique cultural and artistic experiences for students and their families in Seogwipo's Andeok, Moseulpo, and Bomok regions.

The program is set to take place at three local children's centers where professional instructors will facilitate small group activities tailored for families. These sessions will occur four times, every Saturday from 10 AM to 12 PM, and will include activities such as handicrafts and family play. The initiative is designed to foster better understanding and respect among family members while promoting a healthy family culture.

Kang Ok-hwa expressed her hopes for the program, stating, "This initiative is expected to promote smooth communication between families and strengthen emotional bonds." She emphasized the agency's commitment to expanding cooperation with regional children's centers to ensure that more families can benefit from various support programs in the future.

For those interested in participating, detailed information about the program can be obtained by contacting the Student Safety Support Division of the Seogwipo City Education Support Agency at 064-783-8153.

In a related educational effort, Guryeong Middle School, led by Principal Ryu Jeong-yeol, hosted a writer invitation lecture on April 14, 2025. This event, part of the school's career exploration activities, was designed to inspire students through direct engagement with literature and history.

Renowned author Kwon Oh-jun, known for his works in history and youth literature, was invited to speak. His lecture, themed 'Wisdom and Patience Learned from King Sejong', drew from his popular book 'New Bird King Sejong'. Kwon shared insights about King Sejong, noting, "Sejong was not a person who was perfect from a young age, but a youth who struggled, challenged, and grew. I hope you all remember that today's struggles can become wisdom in the future."

Students responded positively to the lecture. Kang Ye-won, a third-grade student, remarked, "It was good to be able to meet the author of the book in person, and I was able to learn a lot about King Sejong because the lecture was very interesting and explained things well."

A teacher from Guryeong Middle School highlighted the significance of the event, stating, "This lecture was a valuable time for students to naturally connect with history and literature and contemplate their own lives." The teacher also expressed the school’s commitment to supporting students in designing their futures through various career-linked educational activities involving books.

Furthermore, a school official noted the broader impact of the lecture, describing it as a convergent career exploration program that merges history, literature, and career education. This approach not only provides students with practical lessons and fresh inspiration but also holds great significance in their educational journey. The school plans to continue fostering creative and self-directed talents through various experience-centered programs that connect education with real-life applications.

Both initiatives reflect a growing trend in educational practices that emphasize experiential learning and community engagement. By integrating cultural experiences with academic learning, these programs aim to enrich the educational landscape for young learners in Seogwipo.
