The Semana Santa de Sevilla, renowned worldwide for its cultural, social, and economic significance, is set to take place from April 11 to April 20, 2025. This vibrant festival features 60 brotherhoods that commemorate the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ through elaborate processions that draw thousands of visitors to the Andalusian capital.
Beginning on April 11, known as Viernes de Dolores, the festivities will kick off with a series of processions that continue throughout the week. The processions are deeply rooted in tradition, with each brotherhood showcasing their unique interpretations of religious themes and artistry. The official route begins at the Plaza de la Campana, winding through the city’s historic streets, including Calle Sierpes, Plaza de San Francisco, and culminating at the Cathedral of Seville.
On the first day, several brotherhoods will take to the streets, including Bendición y Esperanza, which departs at 5:00 PM and returns at 1:40 AM, and La Corona, which leaves at 7:45 PM and enters at 11:45 PM. The schedule for the opening day also features Pino Montano, La Misión, Bellavista, and Pasión y Muerte, each with their own designated times.
As the week progresses, the processions will continue with a variety of events. On April 12, Sábado de Pasión, brotherhoods such as Padre Pío and Torreblanca will make their appearances. The following day, Domingo de Ramos, will see the grand procession of Borriquita, starting at 2:35 PM and entering the official route at 4:05 PM.
April 14 marks Lunes Santo, with brotherhoods like San Pablo and Santa Genoveva participating in the processions. San Pablo is scheduled to depart at 11:30 AM and enter the Cathedral at 1:00 AM the next day, while Santa Genoveva will follow suit, leaving at 12:30 PM and entering at 1:00 AM.
On Martes Santo, April 15, the processions will feature El Cerro, San Benito, and Dulce Nombre, among others. Each brotherhood will follow a specific schedule, with El Cerro beginning at 11:40 AM and entering the Cathedral at 1:00 AM.
Miércoles Santo, April 16, will showcase La Sed and San Bernardo, with their respective times set for departure and entry into the Cathedral. The following day, Jueves Santo, will see a more stable weather forecast, but weak showers are still a possibility. Brotherhoods such as Los Negritos and Las Cigarreras will participate, with Los Negritos leaving at 3:00 PM and entering at 10:00 PM.
The Madrugá, the night between April 17 and 18, is one of the most anticipated moments of Semana Santa. This night will feature several significant processions, including La Macarena and El Gran Poder, leaving at midnight and entering the Cathedral at various times throughout the early morning hours.
On Viernes Santo, April 18, the processions will continue with La Carretería and Soledad de San Buenaventura, both of which have scheduled times for departure and entry into the Cathedral. The following day, Sábado Santo, will feature El Sol and Los Servitas, while the final day, Domingo de Resurrección, will begin with a procession at 8:30 AM, culminating in a grand entry at 4:30 PM.
The weather during Semana Santa 2025 is expected to be variable, with forecasts indicating potential rain and cold air masses affecting the region. According to Aemet, the weather on Lunes Santo is predicted to be partly cloudy with scattered showers, particularly in the afternoon. Martes Santo is expected to bring more rain and possible thunderstorms, while Miércoles Santo may see a drop in temperatures and some snow at higher elevations.
As the week progresses, the weather is anticipated to stabilize somewhat, but there is still a risk of showers on Jueves Santo and possibly more rain on Viernes Santo due to a new frontal system moving in from the west. The culmination of the Semana Santa festivities on Domingo de Resurrección may also bring additional rainfall.
For those unable to attend in person, local television channels such as PTV Sevilla, 7TV Sevilla, and Canal Sur will provide extensive coverage of the processions, allowing viewers to experience the event from home. The Consejo de Hermandades y Cofradías de Sevilla will also offer live broadcasts from key locations along the Carrera Oficial, ensuring that the spirit of the Semana Santa can be shared widely.
The Ayuntamiento de Sevilla has launched a promotional campaign celebrating the Semana Santa, featuring verses from the pregón dedicated to the Hermandad del Amor, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. This initiative aims to enhance the visibility of the event and encourage both locals and tourists to partake in the festivities.
As Semana Santa 2025 approaches, anticipation builds in Seville. The processions, steeped in history and tradition, promise to be a spectacular display of devotion, artistry, and community spirit. With the weather being a significant factor, attendees are encouraged to stay informed and prepared to fully enjoy this iconic celebration.
