Sejong City Hosts 17th Climate Change Week Events

The week-long celebration features engaging programs promoting carbon neutrality and environmental awareness.

Sejong City is gearing up to celebrate the 55th Earth Day by hosting the 17th Climate Change Week event from April 21 to April 26, 2025. This year’s theme, "Let’s Try Climate Action! Let’s Go Adaptive Living!" aims to engage the community in carbon-neutral practices through a variety of participatory programs.

The event will kick off with an Earth Day dimming campaign on April 22, where major buildings and facilities—including the city hall, public institutions, apartment complexes, and the Hanumuri Bridge—will turn off their lights for ten minutes starting at 8 PM. This symbolic act is intended to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the environment. Citizens are encouraged to join in by dimming lights in their homes and businesses as well.

In an effort to promote long-term engagement, Sejong City has designated the 22nd of every month as "Dimming Day." This initiative aims to foster a culture of energy conservation and greenhouse gas reduction, with regular dimming campaigns scheduled for 8 PM, lasting ten minutes.

The main event, titled "Carbon Neutral Festival," will take place on April 26 from 1 PM to 5 PM at the Sejong Central Park Urban Celebration Madang. Organized by the Sejong Climate and Environment Network, this festival will feature a range of activities including the "Challenge! Carbon Neutral Daring" experience program, a dimming performance, and various eco-friendly booths. These activities are designed to make environmental education more accessible and engaging for all attendees.

In addition to the festival, the week will host the 2nd Sejong City Climate and Environment Children’s Poetry and Drawing Contest, an exhibition of climate and environmental artworks, and an online campaign encouraging carbon-neutral practices. These initiatives aim to involve participants of all ages and backgrounds, emphasizing that everyone has a role to play in combating climate change.

According to Kwon Young-seok, the head of the Environmental and Greenery Bureau, “It is a crucial time for practical responses to the climate crisis in our daily lives. I hope that through this event, all citizens will actively engage in climate change responses.” This sentiment reflects the city’s commitment to fostering a proactive approach towards environmental issues.

The Climate Change Week event not only celebrates Earth Day but also serves as a platform for educating the public about the importance of sustainable living. By encouraging participation in various programs, Sejong City aims to cultivate a community that is informed and motivated to take action against climate change.

As the world grapples with the realities of climate change, local initiatives like those in Sejong City play a vital role in creating a culture of sustainability. The upcoming Climate Change Week is a reminder that collective action, no matter how small, can lead to significant change.

With a diverse lineup of activities planned, Sejong City is setting a precedent for how local governments can engage their communities in meaningful climate action. The integration of fun and educational experiences is expected to draw in residents and inspire them to adopt more sustainable practices in their daily lives.

As Earth Day approaches, the anticipation builds for what promises to be an impactful week of climate action in Sejong City, encouraging everyone to reflect on their environmental footprint and commit to a greener future.
