Seattle Braces For Rainy Christmas Week Ahead

Stormy weather brings risks of flooding, gusty winds, and mountain snow

Seattle weather is gearing up for a challenging Christmas week, with forecasts indicating cloudy skies, rain, gusty winds, and even mountain snow for western Washington. Temperatures are expected to hover between the upper 40s and low 50s throughout the week, providing no respite from the usual dampness associated with this time of year.

According to FOX 13 Seattle, the weather systems are expected to impact the entire region. The forecast begins with breezy conditions as winds swept through areas like North Bend and Enumclaw early Saturday. Although these winds diminished by midday, the National Weather Service issued wind advisories for the Central and North Coast due to gusts reaching 45-50 mph, leading to concerns about tree damage and power outages.

On the coast, residents have been warned of dangerous high surf conditions, with waves forecasted to reach between 25 to 30 feet. This has prompted officials to advise everyone to maintain safe distances from beaches and jetties, as the powerful surf can easily sweep individuals off their feet.

The winds will remain variable throughout the week. After some blustery conditions this weekend, Seattle is expected to be somewhat sheltered from the worst of the gusts on Sunday, but shifts back to breezy periods on Christmas Day and toward the end of the week are anticipated. While significant windstorms are not expected, there could still be minor to moderate impacts from winds at times.

Weather-wise, this Christmas week is forecasted to be particularly rainy. Forecasters predict daily chances of rain, especially as weather systems continue to roll through the area. The heaviest rainfall is expected to coincide with Christmas Day, potentially causing flooding concerns throughout the region, particularly around rivers, creeks, and streams.

Mason County is already under a Flood Watch from Sunday morning through late Sunday night, sparking worries about the Skokomish River and its tributaries. The rainfall combined with the recent weather could lead to flooding, and forecasters recommend residents remain vigilant.

Alongside these downpours, mountain passes such as Stevens and White Pass are anticipated to receive significant snowfall, which is expected to return starting Sunday and persist throughout the week. This will provide some challenges for travelers seeking to navigate the Cascades during the holiday week.

Christmas Day might see snowfall at Snoqualmie Pass too, creating elevated risk factors for travel. Authorities are urging anyone planning to head to the mountains to prepare for winter conditions. Those traveling across major mountain passes are advised to check travel conditions and prepare for potential delays.

Weather forecasts indicate the potential for additional weather systems to move through after Christmas, with continued threats for flooding and landslides as the rain persists along with snowmelt from the mountains. More rain is expected daily, leading up to and through Christmas.

Even during the festivities, the Seattle area will see wet and cloudy weather, reminding everyone to plan for indoor celebrations if necessary. Forget the traditional white Christmas; it might just be gray and soggy instead!

Residents should remain updated as forecasts continue to evolve, adapting their holiday plans accordingly. It’s always wise to stay informed on the latest updates from local meteorologists, especially when it involves severe weather warnings and potential impacts on daily life.

While some might wish for snow during the holidays, it’s prudent for those celebrating around Seattle to brace for rain instead. Whether it’s cuddling up indoors with family or making adjustments to travel plans, this Christmas week will be one of adaptation and care.

So be prepared, stay informed, and have a safe and merry holiday season, no matter what the weather may bring!
