Search Underway For Missing Teenage Boy At North Avoca Beach

Emergency services rally to find 15-year-old swept away by rough surf conditions

A large-scale search is currently underway for a teenage boy who reportedly disappeared off the coast of North Avoca Beach, situated on the New South Wales Central Coast. The 15-year-old was last seen around 3 PM on Tuesday, December 24, 2023, after being swept off a rock shelf due to hazardous surf conditions.

Authorities have mobilized significant resources to locate the missing boy, including New South Wales Police, NSW Ambulance, local surf lifesavers, and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. Emergency responders began conducting both sea and air searches shortly after the incident was reported.

According to Marine Rescue NSW Inspector Steve Raymond, the crew was deployed around 4:30 PM with the rescue vessel Terrigal 30. “Conditions offshore are choppy with 2.5m to 3m swell,” Raymond noted, emphasizing the challenging environment confronting rescue teams.

The community has been urged to remain cautious, especially during the holiday season. Central Coast Councillor Jared Wright expressed his concerns via social media, stating, “This is a reminder for everyone to please be safe in the water this summer.” Wright's message highlights the dangers of the surf, particularly following several major incidents reported on the same day.

The search operation was suspended around 7 PM due to fading daylight and worsening sea conditions but is scheduled to resume early on Christmas Day. Despite the pause, authorities remain hopeful of finding the teenager safe.

Surf Lifesaving NSW chief executive Steve Pearce issued a heartfelt plea during this difficult time. “We want everyone to return to their families and to do this we plead with you to please think before you take risks.” Pearce underscored the need for beachgoers to think critically about their safety, especially during the festive period when visitors flock to popular destinations.

He also provided alarming statistics, noting, “Seventeen people have drowned on the NSW coast since July 1 this year.” This stark reminder of the risks associated with swimming has prompted officials to reiterate beach safety messages. “Please stop, look and stay alive,” he added, reinforcing the importance of awareness and caution around water.

The entire community is feeling the impact of the tragedy, with many residents expressing their thoughts and prayers for the boy and his family. Councillor Wright remarked, “The thoughts of our community are with the young man and his family during this difficult time.” His comment reflects the collective concern and empathy felt throughout the area as authorities continue their search efforts.

With the summer season underway, beach safety remains of utmost importance. Officials encourage visitors to swim between the flags, always with friends, and to inform someone of their whereabouts when heading to the water. These precautionary measures are needed now more than ever as families gather to celebrate the holidays by the sea.

Local authorities, alongside families and the community, are holding onto hope for the safe return of the teenager. The response from various emergency services serves as a poignant reminder of the risks posed by the ocean, particularly during this time of year when many people visit the beach for leisure.

While the search for the missing boy continues, residents are urged to prioritize safety and to heed the warnings of local officials. The immediate community’s support during this challenging time reinforces the significance of awareness and safety at popular beaches like North Avoca.

Efforts remain coordinated, with updates expected as the search resumes at dawn. Everyone involved is hopeful for positive news as the search teams take to both the sea and sky once more. The importance of taking care around outdoor water settings is more pronounced, as awareness can save lives.
