Search Continues For Missing British Tourist After Boat Fire

Rescue teams employ divers and surface searches near Koh Tao as hope remains for Alexandra Clarke's safe return.

On March 16, 2025, tragedy struck off the picturesque shores of Koh Tao, Thailand, when the tour boat DAVID JOHNE caught fire, leading to one tourist going missing after the incident. The boat was transporting 22 passengers for a day of snorkeling when disaster struck, sending waves of panic among those on board.

According to authorities, the fire erupted as passengers prepared to enjoy the waters, resulting in swift action from nearby vessels. While 21 of the tourists were rescued without injury, 25-year-old Alexandra May Harriet Clarke, originally from the UK, is still unaccounted for. She reportedly stepped away to use the restroom just before the flames ignited.

"The search operation was coordinated by provincial police and navy teams, emphasizing the urgency of the situation," said N.O. Nattapol Sinpoopon, the Deputy Commissioner of Provincial Police Region 2, who has been directly overseeing the rescue efforts. The operation commenced swiftly and continued through March 17.

Special teams from the Navy, assisted by local rescue organizations, were deployed on March 17 to locate Clarke and search the surrounding waters. The teams utilized both boats and helicopters to cover the extensive area around the shipwreck site, which was determined to be approximately 5 nautical miles from Koh Pha Ngan.

The search operations have been particularly challenging due to the currents and visibility conditions offshore. Divers and rescue workers were engaged for hours underwater but reported no signs of Clarke. Instead, they planned to adjust their tactics moving forward, shifting to surface searches to maximize visibility and increase the chances of finding her.

Clarke’s disappearance has deeply affected her friends and family, who are anxiously awaiting updates on the situation. A close friend, who preferred to remain anonymous, shared their distress: "Alexandra is such a vibrant person, always full of life and energy. It's hard to process what’s happening." This sentiment echoes the emotional strain felt throughout the local expatriate community as they rally around her family during this time.

On March 18, rescue teams intend to broaden their search. They will use boats to canvas the waters where the boat burned and sank, instructing local fishermen and passersby to keep vigilant. Keeping the public informed is pivotal as authorities hope for any sighting or report concerning Clarke.

Despite the difficulties faced, the hope remains resolute among Clarke’s loved ones and search teams. Her family has expressed gratitude for the tireless efforts of the rescue personnel and remains optimistic for her safe return.

The incident raises pressing concerns about safety protocols for tourist adventures, especially those involving water activities. Authorities are likely to undertake thorough investigations of the event and evaluate measures going forward to prevent similar accidents. The local community is rallying together, providing support to rescue operations and working collaboratively to keep the safety of tourists at the forefront.
