Scott L. Schwartz, Beloved Actor And Wrestler, Dies At 65

The actor known for his role as Bruiser in the Ocean's film series passes away due to health complications

Scott L. Schwartz, best known for his role as Bruiser in the Ocean’s Eleven franchise, passed away on November 26, 2024. He was 65. His wife, Misty Schwartz, confirmed his death was due to congestive heart failure at their home located in Covington, Louisiana.

Schwartz’s portrayal of Bruiser, who was hired by George Clooney’s character, Danny Ocean, to fake beat him up during the heist scenes, made him memorable to viewers. He initially appeared in the 2001 original, returning for Ocean’s Twelve (2004) and Ocean’s Thirteen (2007). Clooney expressed his sorrow, stating, "I’m sorry to hear Scott is gone. We did three films together and I’ve never been so gently punched. He was a gentle soul and he will be dearly missed."

Born on March 19, 1959, Schwartz grew up in Philadelphia and became known for his towering 6’10” frame. He began his career as a professional wrestler, adopting the names Giant David and The Israeli Commando. After making the transition to acting, he became recognized not just for his roles on screen but also for his work behind the scenes as a stuntman. His extensive acting career saw him appear in over 100 productions, including The Scorpion King, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Schwartz’s versatility allowed him to work across genres, from comedic roles on The Tonight Show to more serious characters. One noteworthy project was his 2010 film, Changing Hands, where he acted, directed, and wrote alongside his Ocean’s co-star Eddie Jemison. His filmography also features popular titles such as Spider-Man, Castle, and Fun with Dick and Jane.

Beyond acting, Schwartz was known for his vibrant personality. Friends and family frequently described him as "so full of life." According to his representative, Schwartz loved life, food, and travel, and he dedicated significant time to charity work, particularly visiting children battling cancer. He was honored with the Glass Slipper Award from the Children's Healthcare Foundation of California, recognizing his exceptional contributions to supporting children during difficult times.

Schwartz is survived by his wife, Misty, and their two children, Angela and Adam. He was also dearly loved by his extended family, including his mother-in-law, Brenda, and several cousins and relatives. Misty reflected on his life with fondness, sharing, "Most people associate Scott with the movies, but those who know him personally associated him with being a jolly person, so full of life, a strong loving person, foodie and travel aficionado." She added, "He truly loved life and everyone he met along the way."

The entertainment community is mourning his loss, remembering not just his on-screen performances but the light he brought to those around him. Schwartz’s impact on film and his generous spirit will undoubtedly be missed.
