Scott Boland Set For Boxing Day Test Return After Memorable Debut

After stunning performances at MCG, Boland eyes continued success against India.

Scott Boland, the Australian fast bowler, is preparing to return to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) for the Boxing Day Test, reflecting on his unforgettable debut three years ago. Boland made headlines during the 2021 Boxing Day Test against England, where he achieved remarkable figures of six wickets for just seven runs, leading Australia to victory by an innings and 14 runs and securing the Ashes.

“It’s funny. All I wanted to do from when I was growing up was play Test cricket, and then I was walking off at lunch, and I was like, ‘Geez, I’m glad it’s done’,” Boland recalled, speaking with The Sydney Morning Herald. He shared how he had anticipated the day would be challenging but instead found himself overwhelmed by the incredibly positive turn of events. “I thought it was going to be a bit of a slog. I still can’t believe it, really. I only bowled 24 balls or something like,” he added. Boland attributed his breakthrough performance to years of hard work playing for Victoria on less favorable pitches, saying, “It all sort of worked out on one day.”

Now, Boland is set to take the field again, replacing Josh Hazlewood, who has sustained a calf injury. After recently showcasing his skills by grabbing five wickets during the Adelaide Test against India, Boland is confident but aware of the stiff competition within the Australian bowling lineup. He confirmed, “I’d love to play every game. But I’m comfortable with my position in the squad. I know there are three of the best fast bowlers Australia’s ever had.”

Ahead of the pivotal Boxing Day Test, which is part of the Border Gavaskar Trophy series currently tied at 1-1, Australian captain Pat Cummins endorsed Boland as he prepared to make his big return. Cummins stated, “Whenever he gets his chance, he steps in and looks like he’s one of the best bowlers in the world, basically, whenever he plays.” He humorously remarked, “Boland’s selection 'stops riots outside the Members Stand,' which is good,” referencing Boland's popular status among fans.

Boland's numbers speak volumes about his talent and effectiveness. His phenomenal average of 20 across 11 Tests, including 40 wickets, has established him as one of the keys to Australia's success on home soil. Commenting on his impressive track record at the MCG, where he holds an average of just 13.8, Cummins expressed confidence, saying, “He bowled beautifully in Adelaide. He loves bowling here. He’s obviously played probably more than anyone else here at the MCG.”

Reflecting on his continuous development, Boland stressed the significance of preparation and discipline within his routine. He stated how he remains vigilant not to bowl loose balls, noting, “I can’t afford to bowl any bad ball.” He also revealed his practice methods, highlighting the importance of maintaining his run-up speed and comfort level leading up to the first delivery. “I’m someone who likes to bowl a bit during the lunch break or at tea...just to make sure I’m ready to go,” Boland explained.

Boland’s commitment to maximizing his Test opportunities is evident. “I just want to play as many as I can. Whatever opportunities come up, wherever they might be, I just want to be ready to go,” he affirmed. His aspiration to represent Australia for as long as possible drives him to stay focused and prepared.

With the MCG hosting the Boxing Day Test set against the gripping narrative of player comebacks and historical stakes, Boland's return promises to reignite fans' memories of his heroic debut. Australia is poised to reclaim the Border Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in ten years, and with Boland back on the squad, hopes run high for what’s to come. The stage is set for drama, excitement, and perhaps another historic performance from Boland.
