Schema-Archimandrite Iliy Dies At 94, Community Mourns

The revered elder's funeral will take place on March 18, honoring his lifelong service to the church.

Schema-Archimandrite Iliy (Nozdrin), a revered figure within the Russian Orthodox Church and confidant to Patriarch Kirill, passed away during the night of March 15, 2025, at the age of 94. His funeral service is set to take place on March 18 at the Vvedensky Stavropigialny Monastery of Optina Pustyn, marking the end of his remarkable life dedicated to the revival of monastic tradition.

Born Alexei Nozdrin in 1932 to a devout Christian family in Stanovoy Kolodez, Orlovskaya Oblast, Iliy's early years were marked by loss and resilience. His father died after sustaining injuries during World War II, leaving his mother to raise four children alone. Following his secondary education, Iliy served in the army before pursuing higher studies at the Serpukhov Mechanical Technical School and the Saratov Theological Seminary.

Due to the closure of the Saratov Seminary, Iliy completed his education at the Leningrad Theological Seminary, where he became known for his dedication to the faith. He was tonsured as a monk by Metropolitan Nikodim (Rotov), adopting the name Ilian, and was later ordained as hierodeacon and hieromonk.

His ecclesiastical career took him to the Pskov-Pechersky Monastery, where he served for ten years before moving to the Great Martyr Panteleimon Monastery on Mount Athos. There, he played a key role in preserving monastic life during challenging times. Iliy’s most notable contribution came after his return to Russia, where he was appointed the head of the recovering Optina Pustyn monastery, traditionally famous for its eldership. His efforts over two decades significantly revived the old traditions of the monastery.

Since 2009, Iliy served as the personal confessor to Patriarch Kirill, affirming his influence within the Russian Orthodox Church. His insights and guidance were widely respected, underlined by noted endorsements from figures such as President Vladimir Putin, who stated, "Iliy is loved by the entire Russian Orthodox Church." Such reflections highlight the respect Iliy commanded both as a religious leader and community figure.

The news of Iliy's passing prompted reactions from various public figures and members of the clerical community. Many clergy and parishioners gathered to serve Litia prayers for him, expressing their sorrow and respect. The community of Optina Pustyn released a statement requesting prayers for the newly departed Schema-Archimandrite Iliy, to whom they attribute significant contributions to the church.

The farewell ceremony will commence on March 17, allowing the faithful to pay their respects before the funeral. This ceremony reflects the deep connection the community shares with Iliy, who spent his final days at the Pretechensky Skete within the monastery grounds.

Prior to his passing, Iliy had faced several health challenges. He was hospitalized for intensive care several times, including during the onset of COVID-19, yet remained actively engaged with his community until the end. His last blessing was said to have been delivered shortly before his death, emphasizing his commitment to his followers.

The Optina Pustyn monastery, under Iliy’s influence, has become more than just a religious site; it serves as a center of spirituality and community for countless believers. His life exemplified the values of faith, service, and dedication, and his legacy will undoubtedly inspire future generations of the clergy.

Many await the funeral, which marks not only the loss of a beloved elder but also the celebration of his substantial life. Schema-Archimandrite Iliy will be remembered for his unwavering devotion and significant impact on the Russian Orthodox Church and the people he served.
