Schema-Archimandrite Iliy (Nozdrin), a revered figure within the Russian Orthodox Church and confidant to Patriarch Kirill, passed away during the night of March 15, 2025, at the age of 94. Born Alexei Nozdrin in 1932 to a devout Christian family in Stanovoy Kolodez, Orlovskaya Oblast, Iliy's early years were marked by loss and resilience. His father died after sustaining injuries during World War II, leaving his mother to raise four children alone. Following his secondary education, Iliy served in the army before pursuing higher studies at the Serpukhov Mechanical Technical School and the Saratov Theological Seminary.
Due to the closure of the Saratov Seminary, Iliy completed his education at the Leningrad Theological Seminary, where he became known for his dedication to the faith. He was tonsured as a monk by Metropolitan Nikodim (Rotov), adopting the name Ilian, and was later ordained as hierodeacon and hieromonk.
His ecclesiastical career took him to the Pskov-Pechersky Monastery, where he served for ten years before moving to the Great Martyr Panteleimon Monastery on Mount Athos. There, he played a key role in preserving monastic life during challenging times. Iliy’s most notable contribution came after his return to Russia, where he was appointed the head of the recovering Optina Pustyn monastery, traditionally famous for its eldership.
