Scandal Erupts At RG Kar Medical College Amid Corruption Claims

Allegations against ex-principal include selling bodies and influencing students' grades

Corruption allegations at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have surged following the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor. The former principal, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, is at the center of these claims, facing accusations of selling unclaimed bodies and trafficking medical waste during his tenure.

The storm was ignited by former deputy superintendent Akhtar Ali, who asserts he reported Ghosh’s misconduct to authorities back as early as 2023. Yet, instead of action, Ali alleges he was transferred for his whistleblowing.

Ali claims Ghosh managed to create a web of illegal activities, profiting significantly from them. He was said to earn large sums by selling biomedical waste, including syringes and gloves, to contacts possibly linked to organized trafficking networks.

Ali has directly accused Ghosh of selling unclaimed bodies, stating this practice violates legal stipulations manding such remains should be handled by approved facilities. He pinpointed financial kickbacks, where Ghosh supposedly took a 20 percent commission on hospital tenders.

The practice of soliciting bribes from students has also been highlighted, with Ali alleging Ghosh demanded payments from students who struggled academically. This scandal not only implicates Ghosh but suggests systemic corruption within the institution itself.

According to Ali, actions were often taken to deliberately fail students to extort money for passing grades. He emphasized this tainted academic integrity has hurt many students caught in this scandal.

Despite his claims reaching the vigilance department, no serious consequences for Ghosh ensued. Ali lamented receiving no support after his complaints, feeling ignored as the corruption thrived around him.

The legal situation escalated when it came to light how Ghosh responded to the murder case of the trainee doctor. The Calcutta High Court imposed scrutiny on Ghosh, raising questions about his handling of sensitive information immediately after the incident.

After the murder, Ghosh's actions reportedly frustrated authorities, as he delayed allowing the victim's parents access to her body. Uncharacteristically, his explanations appeared inconsistent during subsequent questioning by investigators.

Accusations against Ghosh have triggered considerable public outcry, demanding justice and accountability. Amidst mounting pressure, the Mamata Banerjee-led state government announced the establishment of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the allegations against him.

The allegations reflect poorly on not just Ghosh, but also the institutional integrity of RG Kar Hospital. Protesters, including doctors and civil society members, have rallied for thorough investigations and systemic reform to prevent future abuses.

Interestingly, Ali's statements about Ghosh's wrongdoings coincide with claims of pervasive corruption at the hospital. This has elicited fears about the safety and ethical treatment of students and patients alike.

The continuing investigation also takes on more weight as the CBI weighs its involvement, reflaming public interest. Communities are eager to see if real accountability emerges from such sensitive allegations.

Adding to Ghosh's challenges, reports surfaced alleging Ghosh's immediate transition to another principal position just hours after resigning from RG Kar. His reinstatement at Calcutta Medical College has faced intense scrutiny, especially following the High Court’s intervention.

Ghosh's legal troubles seem to be compounding as even the Supreme Court has reprimanded him for attempting to mask the circumstances surrounding the death of the young doctor. The route toward finding justice remains laden with obstacles and widespread concerns about administrative complicity.

These developments have ignited nationwide protests demanding accountability from institutions supposed to protect student lives. Although Ghosh maintains his innocence, public sentiment is largely sympathetic to the victim's family seeking justice.

With the situation rapidly developing, the spotlight remains fixed on RG Kar Medical College, urging vigilance against corruption and the protection of basic human rights. Authorities are urged to restore trust within the medical community by acting decisively on these claims.

Calls for extensive reforms and rigorous oversight are reverberations echoing throughout the community striving for justice. The aftermath of this tragedy is shaping conversations about ethics and accountability within Indian medical institutions.
