Saudi Arabia Yet To Confirm Ramadan 2025 Start Date

The holy month could begin on March 1 or 2, depending on moon sighting results.

With the month of Ramadan approaching, preparations are being made across various parts of the world, particularly focusing on when the holy month will officially begin. According to reports, the government of Saudi Arabia has yet to confirm whether Ramadan 1446 AH will commence on Saturday, March 1, 2025, or Sunday, March 2, 2025. This announcement hinges on the sighting of the crescent moon, which is expected to take place on the evening of February 28, 2025.

Predictions by the President of the Jeddah Astronomy Society, Majed Abu Zahra, indicate a high likelihood of the moon being sighted, leading to the commencement of Ramadan on March 1, 2025, but exact confirmations will be awaited from Saudi authorities. The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia has urged Muslims to participate in the moon sighting on the evening prior to Ramadan, aligning with practices followed by Muslims globally, including regions like Indonesia.

Similar preparations are also underway in Indonesia. The city of Mataram has announced school holiday schedules inline with Ramadan, as detailed by Yusuf, the head of the city’s education division. Starting from February 27 until March 5, students will engage in home-based learning assignments. Schools will officially reopen on March 6, allowing students to continue their learning during Ramadan until March 28.

During this period, educational activities will be adapted to promote religious engagement, encouraging Muslim students to participate in Quran recitation, religious camps, and studies aimed at bolstering their faith and good character. Non-Muslim students will be offered guidance and religious activities appropriate to their beliefs, ensuring inclusivity.

Meanwhile, as Ramadan approaches, many citizens are getting ready for the traditional practice of exchanging new banknotes for the Eid al-Fitr festivities. The central bank of Indonesia, Bank Indonesia (BI), will start its currency exchange services from March 3 to March 27, 2025, in anticipation of increased demand. To cater to the large number of people interested, BI will have cash services operating across various locations, aiming for streamlined and secure processes.

Bank Indonesia has encouraged citizens to avoid using unauthorized intermediaries for their transactions to minimize risks of fraud. Citizens can conveniently access the money exchange service via the BI’s official channels online, where they will need to register their details and select their desired currency exchange locations and dates.

On a separate note, as Ramadan is underway, the issue of Tunjangan Hari Raya (THR) or holiday bonuses for online transport drivers has come to light. Reports from CNBC Indonesia indicate the Ministry of Manpower (Kemnaker) is pushing for digital apps like Gojek and Grab to grant THR to their drivers. Indah Anggoro Putri, the Director General at Kemnaker, confirmed this initiative, emphasizing the government’s support for these online workers as part of broader measures to protect their rights.

While there are plans to issue recommendations for THR payments, there are challenges remaining, including insufficient data on which drivers are most active. Indah noted the necessity of clarity on this issue so the appropriate assistance can be provided. The expectation from the online drivers is for these holiday bonuses to be mandated, not merely suggested, especially as the increased prices for everyday goods make the bonuses even more significant during the festive season.

Trade unions like the Indonesian Transportation Workers Association (SPAI) have expressed urgency to secure solid commitments from delivery platforms for THR, stressing this is not just about bonuses but also about fairness and recognition as workers, rather than just partners or associates. They argue it’s only right for both active and inactive drivers deserving of THR to receive equal treatment because they have dedicated time and resources to their jobs.

Overall, Ramadan 2025 is setting the stage for community spirit through charitable actions like exchanging money, educational adaptations for students during the holy month, and adapting workplace policies to support workers during this significant time. The anticipation continues to build, keeping individuals and communities engaged as they prepare to observe Ramadan thoughtfully and with compassion.

With the beginning of Ramadan rapidly approaching, Muslims around the world are focusing on their devotion, community bonding, and establishing goodwill through acts of charity and celebration. The month is not just about fasting but also about generosity, reflecting the broader significance of family and social connections during this time of year.
