Saudi Arabia Launches Lexicon To Celebrate Camel Culture

Cultural initiatives across the Middle East revive pride and recognition of Arabic heritage.

The King Salman Global Academy for the Arabic Language (KSGAAL) made headlines recently with the launch of its comprehensive Camel Lexicon, aimed at preserving the unique linguistic heritage related to camels. Launched on December 29, the initiative emphasizes the camel's significant role within Arab culture, providing invaluable insights for researchers and linguists alike.

According to Arab News, this lexicon is much more than just a collection of terms. Dr. Abdullah Al-Washmi, the KSGAAL secretary-general, highlighted its extensive content detailing various aspects of camels, including breeds, descriptions, life stages, and health issues. The lexicon also captures idioms, proverbs, and historical narratives linked to camels, aiming to protect this cultural richness from being lost. Al-Washmi noted, "Language and culture are deeply intertwined and preserving the terms and expressions linked to heritage plays a vitally important role in strengthening Arab cultural identity." This sentiment reflects the academy's broader mission to serve key sectors by promoting the Arabic language.

These efforts align with the recent Cabinet decision to declare 2024 as the 'Year of the Camel,' showcasing Saudi Arabia’s pride in this animal, symbolic of resilience and carrying deep historical significance. The Camel Lexicon builds upon previous initiatives by KSGAAL, which includes other specialized lexicons.

Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) marked World Arabic Language Day with a significant conference at Universidad Carlos III in Madrid. Hosted by the UAE Embassy and attended by students and scholars, this event aimed to shed light on the rich cultural heritage and historical contributions of the UAE on the global stage. Ambassador Majid Hassan Mohammed H. Alsuwaidi, spoke of the UAE's commitment to enhancing global dialogue and intercultural diplomacy, emphasizing the Arabic language's pivotal role as the foundation of the nation’s cultural identity.

The conference delved deep, as Ibrahim Alnuaimi, head of the Embassy’s Department of Political Affairs, presented various initiatives meant to bolster the Arabic language. Highlights included the Arab Language Charter, which aims to integrate Arabic firmly within educational and digital realms, as well as the Mohammed bin Rashid Prize, rewarding excellence within the Arabic linguistics community. Alnuaimi remarked on the UAE’s progressive policies and efforts to spread awareness surrounding the Arabic language, concluding with recognition of the language's pivotal role within Arab identity.

Not only is language preservation important, but cultural organizations are also making strides. Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture, based in Philadelphia, inaugurated its gallery space with the exhibition titled "Imprints of Time and Place". This showcases the work of founder Hazami Sayed, reflecting her personal and cultural experiences throughout her years. The exhibition’s roots date back to Al-Bustan’s history as a children’s Arabic language camp, illustrating its growth to encompass arts and cultural narratives across various mediums.

Sayed elaborated, "This exhibit allowed me to pull different pieces of my time here, and the things have been very close to my heart." The exhibit not only features her artwork, but also showcases significant moments from protests and expressions of resistance across Lebanon and the city of Philadelphia. Her multimedia approach underlines the intertwined nature of culture, memories, and activism, emphasizing the continuing relevance of Arabic language and culture today.

Add to this the recent cultural forum organized by the Shahrazad Cultural Foundation held on December 29, which aimed to address the challenges facing Arabic language and culture. The forum, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, included numerous workshops emphasizing the need for preserving and promoting the Arabic language against modern challenges. Deputy Minister Abdullah Al-Washli noted the significance of the Arabic language as not only central to cultural identity but as foundational to the intellectual heritage of the Arab world.

These formative events signify the concerted effort across the Arab-speaking world to not only preserve their language but also to fortify their cultural heritage for coming generations. The amalgamation of academic institutions, cultural organizations, and government initiatives represent the synergistic steps needed to advance Arabic language and culture, emphasizing its longevity and adaptability amid modern realities. They remind everyone involved of the rich historical narrative tied to the Arabic language and its continuation within the global discourse.

Given the rising global interest and initiatives aimed at enhancing the Arabic language, it is evident these programs are paving the way for future discourse, ensuring the Arabic language remains alive and relevant for young generations to come. This multifaceted approach reinforces not just a linguistic identity, but also instills pride within regional heritage and cultural expressions.
