The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has released the payment dates for social grants in May 2025, alongside important updates to ensure beneficiaries receive their funds without issues. According to SASSA, the payment dates are categorized by grant type and will be spread across three days:
- Older Persons Grant (60–74 years & 75+): Tuesday, May 6, 2025

- Grant-in-Aid: Wednesday, May 7, 2025

Beneficiaries can access their funds through various channels including ATMs, retail outlets like Shoprite and Pick n Pay, or direct bank deposits, depending on their selected payment method during application. SASSA encourages recipients to check their grant status online using the SRD Status Check portal at srd.sassa.gov.za, which requires their South African ID number and the cellphone number used during registration.
In a proactive approach, SASSA is also implementing mandatory biometric verification starting May 5, 2025, aimed at clients without a standard South African ID or those updating personal information. Paseka Letsatsi, SASSA's spokesperson, stated, "This initiative is aimed at enhancing security, improving the integrity of our systems, and preventing potentially fraudulent activities." This verification process is crucial for clients who may have valid IDs but whose details are not reflected in the SASSA system.
In addition to the biometric verification, SASSA has delayed grant payments for certain beneficiaries to allow time for in-person identity verification and income reviews. Letsatsi explained that this initiative is designed to ensure that beneficiaries can confirm any changes in their financial circumstances and update their personal details. "The targeted beneficiaries are those who use alternative forms of identification other than the standard 13-digit South African Identity number to receive their social grants," he added.
Beneficiaries who do not comply with the verification process may face suspension of their grants. Should they continue to ignore the requests, more drastic actions, such as lapsing their grant, may be implemented. Furthermore, SASSA is intensifying measures to ensure eligibility by regularly identifying clients on a monthly basis for verification.
To avoid confusion and ensure timely payments, beneficiaries are advised to follow these essential steps:
- Continue Using Your SASSA Gold Card: No immediate switch is required, as Gold Cards will remain valid until further notice.
- Check Your Specific May 2025 Payment Date: Knowing your payment date helps avoid long queues and missed payouts.
- Be Cautious of Fraud: Only respond to official communication from SASSA or Postbank to avoid scams.
- Visit Postbank Sites Only If Necessary: Use these locations for PIN resets or replacing lost cards.
- Prepare for Biometric Enrolment: Clients without a standard SA ID should be ready for the new verification process.
As SASSA rolls out its national education campaign, mobile units are visiting communities to provide guidance on grant payments and assist with queries related to the SRD.
